Baren Digest Tuesday, 4 March 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2148 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2003 11:47:00 +0000 Subject: [Baren 20903] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2147 I want to thank Kat Pukas for her work as coordinator for Exchange #15. I received my prints on Saturday and showed them to friends and family who were agog at many of them. * * * Julio, I like your idea of one set of calendars printed in oil based inks and a second set printed moku hanga style. The continuity will make each calendar more attractive. As for printing the calendars further, I, like Maria, don't feel attracted to the idea of digital prints of prints. For me there's something dynamic about a handmade print, that tactile thing, that gets lost in the translation to pixels. * * * Congratulations to people with shows Gayle/Ohio ------------------------------ From: Sharri LaPierre Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 10:28:54 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20904] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2147 Welcome Mary Jane, it's a pleasure to have you in the group. And now I'm going to weigh in on the "reproduction" of the prints for the calendar. I know it is done, in fact, I own one such animal which was created for the International Print Symposium: Crossing Boundaries, held in Portland, OR a couple of years ago. But, in general I am against reproductions of any kind for the simple reason that original prints are so inexpensive to begin with. (And, the price we are talking about for the calendar is more than reasonable!) I am especially against reproductions of paintings being sold as prints because here is the perfect opportunity to educate the public - if they can't afford the painting, then introduce them to your woodcuts - explain printmaking to them and show them how they can own original art with very little disposable income. Paintings were meant to exist as one of a kind - and I'm stuck in that groove. If they want a poster, send them to the mall. But let's not pass up these perfect opportunities to introduce folks to the wonderful world of the original (and, therefore, by definition - "fine art") print. This subject happens to be my soapbox and any time it comes up, you can expect an auto-response ;-) Digital printmaking is another subject and BTW, I am having so much fun at the moment experimenting with digital and woodblock combinations - Sharri ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 12:51:39 -0600 Subject: [Baren 20905] Re: Calendar project Thanks to everyone with their input on the calendar stuff...we are still a few days away from any final decisons/announcements....the March issue of the Barensuji newsletter has priorities !!! Louise...I think is great what you are doing making a living with paintings and posters....I think to each it's own, whatever works...works...in these days of suffering economies it is very hard to make a living entirely as a non-commercial artist... Re:"I wonder if you shouldn't think of a higher price for the calendars to be if they are original prints or not charge at all to be consistent with the exchange projects and preserve the value of the prints." Well, is not quite an exchange, is more like the 911-Fund raiser we did last year, except this time the "profits" go to Baren. I think anyone who has been here for any length of time has benefitted from the discussion, the advise, the community feeling, the exchanges and also the website and the ton of info available. Members may or may not opt to purchase a calendar from the group...we are not going to keep a list of who did or who did not....but for sure the bills need to be paid...such as domain names, server fees, occasional losses from the Barenmall sales, funds for special projects, etc...this is a way for members to give something back to the group....in the past we have always voted to keep Baren membership open and fee-free and we would like to keep it that way. I think the majority of calendar purchases would come from the membership itself so while we want to raise some funds, we do not want to put it out of reach for someone to purchase one. I think besides the money thing, it is still above all about "sharing" our art with our fellow printmakers. This calendar-stuff is a good example of a special project...participants would pay for creating/donating their prints for their calendar and for shipping back and forth. But who is going to pay for the actual calendar forms to hold the prints ? Think about 100-150 calendars to be printed...do we add that cost to the participants or does "Baren" cover the cost for the paper and printing of the calendar sheets ? I think is fair that Baren supply those costs. But for projects like this to exist we must have some funds available.... anyways..just a few more ramblings...more to come... thanks...Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: "Cynthia S. Bendix" Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 11:29:51 -0800 Subject: [Baren 20906] Re: digital calendar I agree with Barabara. I'd prefer "real" handmade prints for the calendars. I'd be in the oily print calender group. On another print topic and closely related to using a dremel because of painful hands; I've been printing monotype block and collographic prints using a baren. I've been just barely slipping my fingers under the tie and using the pressure of the heel of my hand to print with. After months now of happy printing, I've noticed real pain in the heels of my hands when I lean on one palm as I get up out of bed in the morning. I love printing with a baren and wonder if anyone else has experienced this? Am I holding the baren wrong or using the wrong part of my hand for pressure against the paper. Any suggestions? She'll be putting her comments and some pictures of her collating party up onto the page pretty soon, so please check back again in a few days... How will it be set up? Couldn't we each do open editions.... so many calendars for sure and then have the option of printing more if necessary? Perhaps, given our tendency to put things off to the last--speaking as a former coordinator of an exchange--the deadline ought to be put forward to, say, mid-September or even earlier.
