Probably won't make it into exchange 17 as I am in #16 but think that "War" would be an excellent theme. Off now to limp in Seattle's latest Peace March. Barbara Patera > YIKES !! It was of my understanding that baren should not be a political organization? If you choose to take on this subject than I would be justified to do art that is pro-American as its subject. Or pro war in Iraq. This is a very political subject and all views would be allowed or you would have censorship. To me appeasement of a dictator is not peace. Appeasement of Hitler did not bring peace. Appeasement of Hitler lead to the death of my wife's family. Today I meet Americans who were from Iraq--their stories reminded me of things that happened to my wife's family. Sorry peace might be an interesting ideal but in today's world it is a very political subject. One persons freedom fighter is another persons terrorist or mass murder. I feel it would be wrong for baren to take on this subject as I am sure I will be censored. john center ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Sat, 22 Mar 2003 17:30:33 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Baren 21087] Re: political art? John, You are 100% right...the only way we can cope together is to not mention politics, although our artwork will not be censored as far as I know. I am sure this is why the list is so quiet, we are all trying not to mention it but it is at the front of our minds. They are chicanos and mexicans from state (michoacan) but living in the Northern area of USA. This week we had the first of them here, Hector Duarte. they will be coming to work in their plate here. in the city of Patzcuaro (40 miles from Morelia, the city where I live) there is an enormous workshop run by the Culture Department, so the artists are leaving here their Bon a Tirer and the printers will run the edition. Recently we had a Drop out from Chicago (well, Alfredo Arreguin, who lives in Seattle) and we are looking for some other chicano or mexican printmaker who lives preferentely in the Chicago area. If you know someone please let me know. Juan Guerrero J. Pilar Ruiz 276 F. del R=EDo.
