It is also just as great for touching up edge tools while working, BUT... some method of shaping, forming and maintaining an edge must be used, as the edge wears too blunt for the hone to work alone. The honing compound by itself can not restore a broken knife tip or change the geometry of an edge, by removing the large (relative) amount of metal in an effective manner. You could try using a felt wheel on a grinder, but the temper of the tool would be ruined in short order and at best you will only have a 'fairly sharp' edge. remember that sharping and honing is simply the application, in a controlled fashion, of abrasives. >From course automotive papers or waterstones, etc, thru less course stuff and fine and finer materials, stopping at the finest, 'green stuff'(Chromium Oxide. Look for a copy of "the compleat guide to sharping" by Richard Lee, at Lee Valley Tools. It will show you all you need to know about sharping. Your work won't be attached to anything.....IT will be the actual page..so perhaps we should select a paper that can withhold a bit of abuse ? leave one inch open at the top for binding... You can do mix-media but it should have some "woodblock-relief" in it. No digital or solar plate stuff unless it plays a minor part on the work. How do we feel about that ? A few people have written me off-list indicating that their schedule is quite full and they can't participate at this time. As I posted on the website, we will try to accomodate everyone interested. Although some of the calendars are already at twelve months...if people want to join in later on, there is no reason we can't go to a 13, 14 or 15 page calendar for any format. Just contact me off-list if your schedule frees up down the line and you want to join the project. I know some of the details may seem a bit confusing, certainly we could have just done one type of calendar with one set of rules, but.... I was trying to offer many options based on the list discussion. I might have looked at the Dan Patrick if I had known of it, maybe even bought one, I can not say. I bought the press before joining Baren. Yes it has a nice steel bed and yes i do turn it over. But I am the only one using it and doubt i could warp it that much. It sits in a cold studio by the bay, near the ocean and I have yet to see a spot of rust anywhere. If you care for you supplies you will not have a problem with this. if i wanted the counter top type of bed for my press I could easily have one made for it, but why? I paid the shipping costs to the US, but we did not have it shipped, we went to Canada and picked it up. there were no import costs thanks to the NAFTA agreement. I am confused. Did you truck it to Todos Santos (ha, ha, thru the not-so-dry gulches) or is it simply sitting in the Seattle area, waiting for your return?
