Print! Congratulations, John Center, on your upcoming show at Anchor Graphics. I'd love to attend but live too far away... Would like to report that more sheep have arrived! Sylvia Taylor's most charming pair of white line sheep on a bed, Barbara Mason's wonderful ' prismatic enigma' ('Some Years Are Better For sheep Than Others...), and Jean Womack's "Local Goats"...Jean, your "Local Goats" were much admired by self and dinner companions, esp. that lively white goat! .......... Julio, I am printing like mad, and have just come off a three-day marathon of suicide printing(better know as reduction printing). Wouldn't you think that I'd know better!? Ha! 'Bring on the clowns! What? They're here and there's only one? Moi? Yep, moi'... O Well- net result, about 30 of the needed 45 for the postcard colander. You did say we could send more than one image, didn't you? I'm already cutting another crater Lake rim piece...but with this one I think I'll keep the learning curve more manageable (no reduction cut with four sumi values this time).David bull may feel perfectly free to laugh his head off at my temerity. but believe you me, there's no quicker way to learn some humility than to attempt a reduction print, hanga style... .................. Welcome to"loyal lurker" Mary Green.' May your days be filled with Moku Hanga and may every print be an incentive to learn more!' It's good that you are planning to be in Kansas City and will have the opportunity to see what the fuss is all about. I could have used some kibitzing and camaraderie myself, this past week. Last night we attended a poetry reading to honor winners in a poetry competition (for which Jim and I were the judges this year) at Lakeland Community College here in northeast Ohio. To my surprise Dean James Brown of the Arts and Humanities department asked me how some of my prints ended up at The Spencer Museum in Lawrence, Kansas as I had listed it on my part of our "judge's bio". I told him about Baren and he said that the Spencer Museum in Lawrence is a superb museum, not to be missed. I asked him how he knew of it and he said that he had attended the university there. Of course, his enthusiasm for the Spencer makes attending the summit all the more delicious since we Summiters will have a chance to see it for ourselves! And, speaking of that. Someone mentioned earlier about all of us staying at the same hotel. Have we given that any further attention? It's getting close! Hi, Yes Gayle and Summiters: I was wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea if many of us stayed at the same hotel. Some of us have special needs , for instance complimentary parking, but we could work around that and perhaps get a large group staying together. I looked on Epedia and there were some good deals I am looking forward to meeting you all ! Good idea about staying together, sometimes you can get special rates as a group, so for example we can say we are with the Baren Summit group and have the hotel reserve a block of rooms at a special discount rate for that week. We used to do this quite a bit when traveling out of state for baseball tournaments and always got good rates. The questions is....which hotel/motel ? Has anyone already looked into or made-reservations at any of the nearby places ? Mike, any recommendations ? thanks....Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Wed, 07 May 2003 12:17:44 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21432] Re: also Where Will We Stay in... I've already more or less made my recommendations on the SUMMIT REGISTRATION page at http://www.barenforum.org/summit -- see hotels link near the top of the page -- They are in order of distance from the studio and the ones I think are most interesting are highlighted in blue on the listing. BUT... You have to remember that I live here, so I haven't stayed in any of these! Talk about the blind leading the blind! I'll put together a list of email addresses and send it to the registered participants so that we can communicate about this directly... Well I am awaiting my PayPal verification so I can sign up for the summit. I wish those staying in hotels the best time and luck finding a hotel together, but I will be carving out a patch of floor to sleep on at the studio.....unplanned trips really mess up your budget..lol. I hope you all dont find me too much of a pest and I promise not to ask too many questions or blind you with too many flash photos. May necessitate some extra carving afterwords. If it's oil based with ink applied with a roller you might be able to do the print job without any sanding if you apply a little pressure when inking the block with the roller. This also might need some more carving in case some previously carved parts take too much ink. The problem with sanding after carving is that it's easy to "round the edges" and lose detail... A way to minimize that is to apply adhesive backed sanding media to glass (or other very flat surface) and then carefully sand the block face down. My view is since it is a normal part of the wood matrix you should just live with it. This is one of the things that makes wood cuts have a personality. john center ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Wed, 07 May 2003 16:47:13 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21437] Baren Summit Hotels OK, Baren Summiteers (one for all and all for one)!
