Maybe Dave has an answer for this one. >Jean Womack >http://www.jeaneger.com Wood and paper EXPAND when they get wet, so wet the concave side to flatten. One way is to dampen a cloth and then lay the plank concave side down on top of the damp cloth (make sure the cloth is in contact with the plank all the way across. Check every 20 minutes or so until it's flat. PS... If it's not too thick a plank, basswood is soft enough so that you can usually pull it flat with a couple of screws into a piece of, say, 3/4" plywood? It's a first for me and I hope everyone enjoys it. The print is very symbolistic (?), a simple black and white block, but chock full of imagery and meaning. I also have strayed from my very realistic bend to a more illustrative look. What a hoot! It's almost complete, just need to carve the outline and spend some time on the details, then print, baby, print! ta ta, d. dew ------------------------------ From: ArtfulCarol#aol.com Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 17:29:22 EDT Subject: [Baren 21471] Baren 911 Firemen Prints in England As a result of the Baren's 911 Remembrance of the Firemen woodcutprints, I have been invited to give a presentation to the Steeple Morden Village School England, , May 22. Why the Steeple Morden Village School? After the 911 Islamic terror attack the children of this school wrote moving letters and made pictures expressing their sorrow and sympathy. The Principal put them all in a portfolio and sent it to be read at a Reunion of my husband's WWII Fighter PilotsGroup. The Pilots of this US Air Force group flew their missions over Germany from the Steeple Morden Airfield. The village children at that time are now the grandparents of today's children who made the portfolio about 911. The grandparents told their children and grandchildren about those days with the result that they have a strong bond with the US. The people of Steeple Morden care about this longstanding relationship between the US and England. I have Baren 911 prints from the Irvington Exibit in 2002 and have downloaded others. Some will be used in an overhead projector as part of the presentation. If any adults show interest, I'll give e-mail addresses. I am not selling. And that is the summary. I am very much anticipating this because it is a worthy presentation for the children and for Baren Carol Lyons Irvington, NY ------------------------------ From: Bette Wappner Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 17:39:51 -0400 Subject: [Baren 21472] Re: Whole Lotta Fun Ok Dan, After reading this, I'm wondering if I should sign up?!!! However, when I tried to add gum Arabic, it jumped up into a rubbery ball of mess. So I gave up because I could not find an additive that would give it some substance. However Bea, you print Chinese style, without adding any rice paste or gum Arabic, so it ought to be possible, right? I think you don't have to add soda ash, all that stuff because it is not going to be washed, correct? You'd have to conern yourself with lightfastness, but that's true of any pigment you try. I work with the concentrated liquid procions in my silk work, to keep inhalants down; am a before-beginner to traditional Japanese style printing, but fascinated and soon in search of tutorials... reading this list and the Baren homesite is a splendid awakening. best, Ruth Jean Womack quoth: > Dear Ruth Temple, > I tried mixing up Procion dyes to make some kind of ink for block printing. > However, when I tried to add gum Arabic, it jumped up into a rubbery ball of > mess.
