Thank you for that. For Summit goers, Jim and I have room in our car for about three if you need rides. As Mike mentioned we are staying at the Homestead Kansas City Country Club Plaza about three miles south of the studio. We will be arriving some time on June 14th. We hope to be picking up Julio from the airport; waiting to hear when his plane gets in. If we all let each other know when we are coming in we can coordinate the rides. John Furr mentioned his minivan and as I mentioned we have our car if there are other people who need rides, especially if people (Jeanne, Sue?) are staying at the Homestead KC Country Club Plaza, too. I wonder if there are any more out there who are staying there also. I will be arriving at the airport at 1;30 pm from Sarasota via Atlanta, via Cincinnati, whew! Traveling used to be easy. I have been on the net for hours trying to arrange hotel and plane trip. John Furr said he will pick up anyone who is there after 4. I guess I can read a good book for two plus hours while I wait for him. But in case Julio and I come in about the same time perhaps I can hitch a ride with you. Can hardly wait to meet everyone. luv Jeanne N. PS. What did I miss? You said that Carol will be showing some prints in England????? ------------------------------ From: Mike Lyon Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 15:28:48 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21488] Re: trip to Kansas There is no reason not to take tools etc. in checked luggage (you can NOT take carving tools in carry-ons). They won't care about carving tools or wood in checked luggage. Don't bring fireworks, though! What an experience, my first solo solid basswood plate. Splinters??? I am using a u-guage to carve out lines and it does splinter. Should I have coated the plate with a heavier varnish, like varnish it twice? It is no disaster as the design is mutable, it can move and shift without ruin. So I can widen splintered cuts and mold them into the design. I have renewed respect for those who copy designs with accuracy. I am glad I am the creator and the carver because I can shift it at my will. I wonder now, will I ever really be a wood carver??? Well more learning will come at the summit. Also do sharper tools mean less splinters? For all newbies, this stuff seems to be a learn as you go process and far more technical in nature than I am used to. Sooo this plate is odd shaped and will be run oil based, one color, I am saving the hanga for later. Still smiling in Nahcotta Marilynn smith Oh a comment about flying with art supplies, they search every bag now regardless. Do not I repeat do not fly with any oil based pigment, they will take it from you. Be sure everything is well labeled, in fact I plan to carry on my water based pigment so i can explain exactly what it is and I will include my cutting tools in a package I will UPS before the summit. (also if you see how they throw bags, you may arrive with broken containers of pigment and clothes of many colors) However if it is only sharp and is in a checked bag it should fly fine. They even questioned my bottle of gum arabic, so be careful so you do not loose supplies. I think it is packages that they do not understand that they question and sharp they do understand, chemicals need an explanation and should be well labled non toxic and water based, etc. Remember to be on time to the airport as now you have to go through a lot of baggage search. And keep your smile, they really are just doing their jobs and trying to keep us safe. We have a booth for demonstrations, selling souvenirs and also two booths where we will be working hands on with kids....it is a fundraiser for Print Arts Northwest (NWPC) so I hated to leave even one day early.....and as all three of us are involved with it, it makes it even harder for those who are left...but I assume they can handle one day and the tear down....we will see. As it is, I think I will be packing and running around like crazy the morning we leave. I thought shipping tools would keep them from ripping my suitcase open to see what they were....I may need my other stuff and hate for it to be all over the floor in some check point. Also, maybe we can carry on our luggage if we ship the tools, I hate checking baggage, they always manage to lose some and sometimes it never shows up. Wanda thought she was going to have to go shopping when we got to Scotland, but her case showed up a day late.Barbara Mike Lyon wrote:At 10:49 PM 5/11/2003 -0700, you wrote: >We will arrive in KC at about 8pm on the 15th....are you really ready for >this, Mike???? >Barbara >We begin the 14th, you know...?? - -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com - ------------------------------ From: Wanda Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 22:20:20 -0700 Subject: [Baren 21492] Art Show at Marylhurst Library Hi everyone, Have been swamped with all kinds of things going on - but I wanted to let any Bareners in the area know that I have some Hanga stuff hanging in the Streff Gallery inside the Schoen Library on the Marylhurst University campus.
