Baren Digest Saturday, 24 May 2003 Volume 23 : Number 2232 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sharri LaPierre Date: Fri, 23 May 2003 08:49:30 -0700 Subject: [Baren 21566] Re: Baren Digest V23 #2231 Booooy, oh! Am I glad to see Murillo meant Sharen instead of Sharri - I wondered what was going on that I should be doing and wasn't or should have been and didn't - I was terminally confused. So glad it is straightened out and prints are going where they are supposed to & this story has a happy ending. We will be reminding folks of the LPE in the not too distant future, but then, I assume everyone except me has already started on that project and are working away - - - - right?? I just finished my contribution to the Deck of Cards, only to discover that I had allowed for a white border and somehow I forgot that detail and it got very sloppy and now needs to be surgically removed which, of course, then makes it the wrong size. So, I guess it will come mounted on a piece of paper the right size - unless someone can think of another remedy to this dilemma. Honest to Pete, even though he may not be a Baren member, if it isn't one thing it is surely something else, or would it be better to just leave the really, truly, unsightly, messy, used to be white, border? Ugh. Sharri ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Fri, 23 May 2003 10:58:34 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21567] Re: deck of cards.... "...I just finished my contribution to the Deck of Cards, only to discover that I had allowed for a white border and ..." Hi Sharri...I would think it would look allright mounted on the correct card-sized paper , usually it makes the design standout more...no matter how hard I try to keep my borders clean I am always messing up....most of the time I just resort to using paper tape all around after inking the block and that takes care of that, it does slow printing an edition quite a bit. I am finishing my card design (five-of-hearts) and hope to start cutting next month....could you give us an update on the details for the LPE II thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N. Julio I printed out your URL but it came back. I need the correct one for the War and Peace exchange so I can keep you and the others up to date on progress, etc. I might have transposed it incorrectly. Gad, I have not even started my cards (2) yet. I am good at deadlines, then I get busy. Sigh, I am so jealous of the summit participants. I thought I would pop in for a hello while I was in Dallas for my sister's wedding (same week as summit), but the wedding was postponed. It seems my sister wants my son to give her away and so she's waiting until he returns from Iraq, which doesn't look like it will happen soon. Can't afford to make two trips to the south in one year... Julio why don't you just go ahead and put me down for that open themed July calendar page you need. I've got a little time on my hands now that I'm unemployed...I think I can squeeze it in. And doing art will give me an excuse for avoiding housework :^] Patti P-C ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Fri, 23 May 2003 16:16:37 -0500 Subject: [Baren 21572] Re: message from Patti P-C Hi Patti, thanks so much for taking one of the calendar spots...I got your name down for the PAGE calendar,July....here's hoping for a quick and safe return from Iraq for your son....will miss you at KC ! At least several of you share my "tool junkie" problem....we love to see (and perhaps collect) special tools. I have recently 'lost' a favorite carving tool, and trying to replace it has led me to lots of sites. On the journey I found Dick Fine Tools, a German firm. Today I received their delightful catalogue...with marvelous tools, including hand forged wave pattern Japanese knives and blade blanks, tools for stringed instrument makers, bonsai tools and carp kites, many pages of wonderful books including several volumes on sharpening, cabinetry, intarsia, Japanese carpentry and architecture, Japanese Folk Architecture and Making Shoji, and many other specialty woodworking books. Page 82 is filled with Japanese brushes of many styles as well as all manner of Japanese printmaking supplies. The following page has beautiful Japanese handicrafts, cedar boxes, trays, teapots. They also carry Swedish carving tools, Swiss carving tools, German tools, and more. Page 53 is a reference page concerning sharpening, and sharpening tools. Subsequent pages carry more sharpening stones than one might imagine! They have camillia oil and clove oil in jars. Shoji screen material in rolls. This is one lovely catalogue! No, I haven't made any price judgements. For today it is enough to just see such wonderful offerings. This is Memorial Day weekend in the USA. I hope that it is a weekend of fond memories and appreciated sacrifices. How can you see the whole edge in a microscope? Mike, thanks for letting us know that your prints are worth a lot of money in Japan. Congratulations. It's well deserved. It's too bad that Americans are not cognizant of the value of collecting original fine art. However, we are told not to buy art as an investment, only because you want to see it hanging on the wall. Or, if you don't want it to fade, to take it out of a drawer now and then and look at it. I think only governments and universities buy and sell and trade great masters for millions of dollars. It's a way of transferring money quickly and easily. That's really all I know about it and I don't really KNOW that, I just thnk it.. I am not privy to those kinds of dealings. Perhaps I have to be a teacher and then my students come back when they grow up and buy my art work. Not while they are still my students, or that would be unethical. Unless they are grownups and in non-credit courses, of course. I once complained that the only artists who make it into the art books were college teachers, but I have come to realize that the colleges hire the best artists to be teachers, so it's not surprising that they make it into the art books. Anyway, let's hope we all make it into the art books one way or the other. And hold the line on prices. After all, you can buy a poster for $30, so why sell a print for that unless you are practically destitute? Certainly not one with 52 impressions. I mean, don't sell a print for $30 unless you are selling it to me. I always like a bargain. The word is that Marco is having a demonstration at Fort Mason in San Francisco tomorrow. Good luck, Marco! You do a very good demonstration. I got a "cortisone shot" from the doctor a couple of days ago, for an injury to my knee and hip. It had practically no effect on my hip but I got sick as a dog last night. I feel better today, though. Jean Womack http://www.jeaneger.com ------------------------------ From: "Jeanne N.
