Baren Digest Saturday, 7 June 2003 Volume 23 : Number 2252 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "April Vollmer" Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 11:34:05 -0400 Subject: [Baren 21724] not very interesting I just wanted to say that Speedball ink and Rives paper are NOT traditional Japanese materials, and the beauty of moku hanga (Japanese for "wood printing") is in the use of proper materials that respond to the printing process. Speedball is a waterbase ink that was designed to imitate the stickiness of oilbase roll-up ink. It is not appropriate for the Japanese technique. Sumi ink not only works better, it's cheaper, too! See the nice thick stuff at Baren Mall. Why would anyone use anything else? Why would we spend our time talking about it? I appreciate the open mindedness of our forum, and inexpensive materials are an option for beginners, but the amount of time devoted to this does not make me very interested in reading the latest posts! best, April www.aprilvollmer.com ------------------------------ From: John and Jan Telfer Date: Fri, 6 Jun 03 23:26:22 +0800 Subject: [Baren 21725] Re: Hanga woodblock printing support- Melbourne, Vic, Australia Woodblock printing support: I have had a request from Dale Prewett requesting a hanga support printmaker living in or around Melbourne Victoria, Australia to please put their hand up for support. Definitely it is not intended for Hanga - it is meant to mimic oil based inks. It dries with a flat, sometimes chalky finish, and it not particularly archival because it is intended for student work. I prefer the satin finish of the oil based ink when it is dry, but that may be personal preference. Any good, professional grade ink is going to give you good results, with practice. They all respond a little differently. Charbonnel, Gamblin and Graphic Chemical are all like working with the cream of the crop! Why make life difficult? Dean - what is the name of the Gel modifier? I highly recommend it, whatever it is called - Sharri ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 12:13:29 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 21727] American Print Alliance show Just a reminder that this show is free to enter and you can find more info at the website, www.printalliance.org so if you want to be in a show that travels, this will be a good one to enter. Those of us on barenforum.org back a while remember fellow artist/printmaker/short-time barener Daniel Kelly. Daniel was a forum contributor for a while back in 1998 & 1999. Most recently I wrote an article on Barensuji's July 2001 issue that shows some of Mr. Kelly's prints. He is also the featured artist in Michael Verne's book "Quiet Elegance: Japan Through the Eyes of Nine American Artists" . http://barenforum.org/newsletter/issue06/issue06.html#feature2 I say "that other guy from Japan" cause Mr. Kelly resides in Kyoto and at last count we had a few members and ex-members overthere....David Bull, David Stones, George Jarvis, Hideshi Yoshida and Richard Steiner. While surfing thru printmaking sites, I found Daniel's current website and links to his studio and printmaking. http://www.danielkellystudio.com/ Daniel Kelly's prints (and paintings) are quite different from what we have come to think as traditional hanga. He often uses a combination of chine-colle and other printmaking techniques in his woodblocks. While he sometimes uses traditional tools, his large (very large!!!!!) prints are sometimes printed with oversized make-shift 'barens' and the help of one or more assistants. A huge water-filled sewage pipe used as a baren comes to mind. See link below: http://www.danielkellystudio.com/danielkelly_2002/printmaking2.html Make sure you checkout his website and the large works on display at his Floating World exhibition page: http://www.danielkellystudio.com/floatingworld.html thanks...Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois) ------------------------------ From: Barbara Mason Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 15:55:43 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 21731] Re: Exchang #17 Yep, but there are only 4 so it is a short list Carol Meyers Sherri La Pierre Jeanne Norman Chase Sharen Linder There you go.... It could be that my husband accidently deleted them...he does a lot of email and we use the same address...hence the new one for me just for these mall messages. I am going into americart once a week now and checking to be sure all the orders are here and I see yours so will add you to the list and charge you......so not to worry. Looking forward to seeing you in Kansas City. Barbara >Dan Dew wrote: Thanks.
