Baren Digest Monday, 23 June 2003 Volume 23 : Number 2268 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lezle Williams Date: Sun, 22 Jun 2003 06:19:13 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Baren 21859] Re: Baren Digest V23 #2267 Dear Charles, Small world... My husband and I both started at Sinclair, then went onto Miami U. We are now settled in Albuquerque, NM My husband taught at English both Sinclair and UD. I don't think Sinclair had any printmaking when I was there - it seemed like any printmakers I knew in the Dayton area all had started at Wright State. Even in college I never had much exposure to woodcut and relief prints - I pretty much found it myself about 4 years ago and am still constantly learning. Baren is a great resource! Dear All, I am busy organizing my photos from the summit, and realize I don't have any of ME to include! If anyone has a few, could they forward? I will put the best if my photos from our delightful Summit up on my site, and send a disk to Mike as well. I took a lot of photos! I left late Friday (well, late for me but for some it was the beginning of the evening!) and what can I say except an endless thanks: to all who were there and shared so generously. Mike Lyon was an extraordinary host. David Bull, an endless source of the kindest suggestions for improvement. The prints at Lawrence (thanks, Steve!) were wonderful. Marco, April, Kent--all of you who so spontaneously offered advice & praise. John Fur and Jim Wohlken for being exceptionally generous in carting me around. But above all, thanks to all the members of Baren, those present and those unable to be there, for making this such an exceptional forum. We must be the most fortunate print-makers in history. Now...if I could only get my fingers untied from this baren...... Ray ------------------------------ From: "Bill H. It was just a great week. I gave a financial report and for all of you who were not there we have about $3000 in the bank, although some of it belongs to Matsumura-san for shipped orders since June 1st. He is paid through May. We will use this money to acquire our non-profit status and in the future, possibly for exhibitions. It was such fun to see everyone, putting faces to the names we know so well. Everyone was as I imagined them, sort of! Many I had met before, but there were some new people, lurkers whose names were new and people who post very seldom. We all learned a tremendous amount . David was generous with his talent and time as always, and seeing him print our blocks we had struggled with was just amazing. It is obvious we are not putting enough muscle into our work! Also an incredible thing happend....I tied my first ever successful baren!!!! Wahoooooo!!!! It is very hard to do and I certainly will get help with the next one, holding things down. It is pretty hard to do it with only two hands, at least for me. I need four or more hands to make it easier! But I did it...April inspired me. I figured if she could do it, I could as I think her hands are smaller than mine. So a small personal success as I have been trying to tie one for four years and have never been able to do it without tearing the darn thing....I just keep ordering new barens. This is not the ideal situation and Dave said I could not leave Kansas City if I did not learn.....he ripped my worn out baren cover off ruthlessly.....and I was forced to tie one. I am sooooo happy to have done this....thanks Dave, for making me face my demons! Mike was a wonderful host and we left his studio in fairly good shape. I am too tired to write more, but with luck others will fill in their experiences. We were the last to leave, as our plane left at 4:45pm...next time we will leave earlier....the last ones have to police the area! Actually everyone did their share and all we really did was help put away the tables. Best to all, and more later! I just arrived home about 1/2 hr. ago. Wow, did I have a super time at the Summit, but sad that our get-together is over. I haven't had this much fun with a group of people in such a long time. Mike Lyon is fantabulous! What a wonderful, kind host, and very talented artist! "Thank you, Mike!" I truly enjoyed meeting everyone and learned so much. When is the next Summit? ! :) Love to all my new friends and to all the other Baren members that I haven't yet met!
