Baren Digest Wednesday, 25 June 2003 Volume 23 : Number 2271 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: G Wohlken Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 09:02:45 -0400 Subject: [Baren 21891] Apres' Summit After a long slow backroads return to Ohio, we arrived late last night. All the way home Jim and I reminisced about the Summit, the indelible snippets, the little vignettes that brought again to life each Barener we met. Words on a page can't give that smile, that light in the eye, the color of personality. I don't think I can add much to the explicit testimonies already written. I told Jim that I feel this community of woodcut artists are my people. When you live in a little town where no one does what you do, it's nice to be unique, but it's a little lonesome too. There's no one to talk woodblock carving with except here on the Forum. The Summit was what I was waiting for and I have carried it home with me. To Mike the beautiful wood of the floors, how smooth and cool they felt under our bare feet, the bark of your studio crow as he called out for that mysterious something crows call out for, the unified rhythm of utterance coming from the dojo below us, the thwack of John Center's mallet, the voices crisscrossing the room -- all that as backdrop for what was learned: three observed ways of sharpening tools (John Furr's, April's, Michael's) , two ways of carving lines (April's and David's), the floating kento registration system ala Maria, and at long last, like others, I got up the nerve to tie a baren. It didn't look the same as the original, but at least I know the steps and hope to be less afraid to jump in and do the job in the future. And, like Julio, who had such a good time with the men at the barbeque restaurant, the end of the table where I sat near Wanda and Sharri at the chinese restaurant dinner deserves a few winks, too. Oh, the plans we have for a certain project coming up! Thank you David for your relentless help, and especially Mike, Steve and Cory for the magic, and thank you to all those who gave the gifts of their time and experience in all capacities. I'm going to go kiss some wood with (at long last) what I hope are properly sharpened tools. And, dang it, I miss you guys. Mike, you may think your studio is quiet, but our astral bodies are there, floating about, chipping away at woodblocks, looking through your beautiful prints. We've moved in. Can we camp on the beach???My son went once and got permission with his kung fu group to camp on the beach near the army base and they had use of the showers and so on there....I think you need permission as otherwise there would be lots of people camping and that could be a real problem..... This has appeal. OK, If we come to Hawaii guess who has to organize it? Better start now for two years from now. Ha. Eveything costs more in Hawaii, but camping could work. best to all, Barbara ------------------------------ From: "kent kirkpatrick" Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 08:58:01 -0700 Subject: [Baren 21893] Re: Baren Digest V23 #2269 Thanks Mike Lyon for a great summit. You may have facilitated even more than you thought with all of the presentations, conversations and connections people made. I got on the plane Saturday dragging my sleep deprived body and mind on, feeling so full of gratitude. Gratitude for all of the new people I met, seeing the usual band of characters (you know who you are) and David's generosity and his great generosity of spirit.  A special thanks to Jim Wohlken, chauffer extrordinaire and to John Furr. Another special thanks to Betty Wapner, who saved my bacon twice! Thanks to all of the people I met from Alaska to Canada to Italy to Japan to all over the U.S.. Woodblock heads are great people! Marco, Richard, Barbara, Mike and Dave were all especially patient with my novice questions. I'm also very grateful for everyone taking the time away from your work to visit our museum and to see Cori's wonderful exhibition and the selection of treasures we had in the print study room for you. Barbara mentioned how Dave identified our previously "anonymous" wood block. The story is a little longer than that -- What was astonishing is that Dave did not know the composition -- he made the attribution to Jacoulet on the basis of a number of clues, such as the apparent age of the block, the nature of the ornament and symbols used by the artist, as well as stylistic characteristics. Within a few minutes his attribution to Jacoulet went from his initial "strong feeling" to his saying he'd put money on it. So we sent my intern, Reed, down to the library to find the catalogue raisonne of Jacoulet's prints, and sure enough, there it was. This whole episode was just after Dave had waxed eloquently in the gallery over several Jacoulet prints in Cori's exhibition -- his most interesting observation was that he (Dave) thinks that Jacoulet pushed his cutters further than anyone else had, with wonderful results. So, it was a good print day for all. Thanks to you all - I will be putting my lovely Wood Like woodcut kit to work soon! In addition to our wonderful weather, we also have an unparalleled resource at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, which houses the Michener Collection of ukiyo-e. The collection of prints and drawings on the western side also has fine holdings of artists like Jacoulet, Charles Bartlett and Elizabeth Keith who adopted and adapted traditional techniques.
