I think you guys scared Jack Reisland's computer to death - all of the messages to him are coming back! :-) Must be a cable loose, or a satellite gone wayward. I hope everyone is now subscribed to the right version of baren & baren after 5. If you have any problems with the web page or subscription form - please contact me directly at with the subject line of "Baren problem" or something like that. Also, some of you have attached a graphic symbol to your e-mail messages. This causes all kinds of html code to be produced in the digest version of the baren list. Please keep your messages in "plain text" & make it easier for all of us to read. He takes the train! Actually, wherever it will be held in 2005, I will have my bags packed. Canada sounds good. I am an oily person, and as someone mentioned, it would be a good idea to have a Summit for the "oily" people. I got so much information out of this Summit that could also be applied to people who work in oils. However I have had a change of heart and after I complete some tasks already started, I am going to begin some Hanga printing. I think I was converted!!!!! Thanks to Dave, Mike, Marco and others who inspired me. It was truly an "Inspired by Japan". week. As John Furr stated, he was a little shy about coming to the Summit where he did not know anyone, and I can say the same. But the whole group bonded in such a way that it will never be forgotten by me, ever. I felt right at home and miss the group terribly and can hardly wait for the next one. Love you all! Hey....a few more thank-yous are in order........ Thanks to Dean Clark for the beautiful Graphic's aprons, I think I got one of the last ones left...they were a real big hit. Thanks to Aimee Youmans from Alaska for letting me share a little space next to her on the floor. Aimee is a new member/lurker and came down with neighbor Carole Baker. Thanks to John Amoss for all the work on the logos and summit T-shirts...for those that did not get a peek at John's new Baren logo.....is terrific !!! .......the t-shirts will be sent out to each summit participant. Thanks to Richard Stockham for his generous use of the sharpening stones. I brought to KC some japanese tools badly (don't laugh Dave...they were in awful shape !) in need of sharpening and thanks to Richard & Dave they now have renewed life ! Thanks to Michael Schneider from Austria for taking time from his travels/show to stop by the Summit and say hi/meet everyone. I am sorry I missed you my friend but Mary Weimer Green showed me your new book of prints. Congratulations to John Center whose work is currently on display at Anchor Graphics (Chicago), the Spencer Museum (Lawrence, Kansas) and next week at the "Barenforum Print Exhibit" (Skokie, Illinois). So nice to meet up and go to dinner with Gary Luedtke, an old baren member who lives in KC. Gary is one of the founding members of our forum, an excellent print designer whose work has been featured in David Bull' Surimono albums. His designs of Hawaiian landscapes are full of bright colors and life... Congratulations to both Linda and Mike Lyon who both celebrated birthdays last week (or about !)... Not only have I heard it is a delightful city, but it is driving distance from my daughter and family in beautiful metropolitan Grand Forks, ND. Two excuses for a trip are probably two more than I need, but every little bit helps. In two years I should be sufficiently recovered from the last Summit and ready to go full speed ahead. Who knows, maybe I'll be a born-again-hanga-printmaker and actually be covering my own ba (roll the rrrrr's)-ren. (I don't know how far it is to drive to GF, but they have a good printmaking dept. at UND, and a fantastic museum -) Who is going to spear-head the Summit Exchange? Did I hear John Furr volunteer to do that?? And who is going to do the pillow book? Inquiring minds want to know these things. I have to tell you all that my husband, the quintessential engineer, goes in to acute arrythymia every time I mention a group of 30 artists with no predetermined program outline, everyone doing their own thing, no designated leader. He cannot fathom how this could possibly work and be productive. I tell him it is true democracy in action and the best of all possible worlds. Aren't we spread a bit thin as it is??!!?? #17 http://www.barenforum.org/exchange/exchange_sign-up.html isn't yet fully subscribed, three or four calendar prints are in the works, Maria's "What is Baren" puzzle exchange, Colleen's 52 card pick-up, the Large print exchange, and I'm already a year and a half behind in my New Year's cards (Old-year's cards?)... !!! Let's just go with what we've already got in the pipeline and not add any more exchanges for the time being! Pillow Book? This was a very popular item -- we're calling it the "Shunga Exchange" -- It's going to be coming up within the year as one of the regular, "official" quarterly exchanges. Never had I experienced such a kind of unusual meeting where people just met and got along so well as if they had known each other in person for a long time! I first felt like I was a fish out of water (is this only an Italian expression??) and thought I would feel kind of lonely as I knew no one at the summit ex= cept for Sharri and April, but I felt an immediate welcoming atmosphere and so on overcame my shyness. Alas! The summit is over but I still carry with me those lovely moments we spent together, which made the event so special and unique. It was not= just about meeting colleagues and putting a name to a face, but it was mu= ch more than that. I find it hard to find the right words to express my feelings ? I am sure most of you feel what I feel so I need not say more. You know what I mean I am really grateful I made it to Kansas city to take part in this special get together and, although I hate repeating myself, once again, I want to thank MIKE for making this possible, Dave, for coming all the way from Japan and for his invaluable demos, April for her support, Marco for his kindness and Jim Wohlken for driving us around all the time! My print at the summit was rather unsuccessful but I will try harder to put into practice what I learned by trying again and again. It took me a while to put together all the photos I took there, but, finally, here is the link: ? If some of you would like a printable version of the photos, just let me know and I will send the full non cropped version of that photo. Mike, I still have one video in my camera which I am not able to upload momenta= rily due to an extremely slow connection? but will do that soon. Sorry again for leaving in such a hurry, missing part of your presentation but I would have missed the flight if I hadn?t rushed. I am looking forward to meeting you all at Summit II in 2005. I think it would be a great idea so everyone has a tangible reminder of what we learned, the new friends we made, and the insiration we took from the summit. Most people already have some of the work, and others had some sort of inspiration from the summit, so it might not be too much, and it could be a sort of mini exchange open only to what ever number of people want to participate. I suppose it is something I could coordinate if necessary.... and if not a formal Baren exchange, I personally would be willing to share prints inspired by the summit with anyone who contacts me off list. As for Galleries, we have the Winnipeg Art Gallery, which has a major collection of Innuit art. Innuit prints were originally carved in stone and printed relief. We've also got a thriving array of publicly funded artist run run centers. We have two optimum summer periods for a summit--one during the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, which brings in theater groups form all over, and the other during Folklorama, a two week multicultural event in which every ethnic group in the city has a "pavilion", which serves up food and entertainment . The food is always great and the entertainment ranges from kids doing folk dances to truly professional groups. Both of these events are significant tourist attractions: http://www.winnipegfringe.com/ http://www.folklorama.ca/ Myron At 11:31 AM 25/06/2003, you wrote: >Winnipeg sounds like a winner in my book. The print I was working on will be used for the calendar postcard and so I might print it with different colors to make it unique. But as John suggests, the exchange of these prints has a meaning that other exchanges can't really match. Many of us saw these prints carved (or begin to be carved), we offered suggestions, maybe even caused design changes, etc.. Additionally, the prints will be widely different, particularly with respect to size--which is sort of appealing (from Maria's instructional block to Barbara's prehistoric block to Jeanne's border collie block to John's gingko block to ....). Now, I'm not saying I'm ready to send off prints next weekend, but I am willing to participate, with as few or as many that also wish to contribute (and I'd offer to help John coordinate, if needed). I think it is one of those opportunities that shouldn't be missed (and I am already involved in the card, puzzle & calendar exchanges). I would be happy to participate. I realize that this would be very meaningful for the people who watched, helped, gave their two cents worth of advice. I am in, if it is a go.
