Baren Digest Tuesday, 21 October 2003 Volume 25 : Number 2414 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Sharri LaPierre Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 08:51:56 -0700 Subject: [Baren 23129] Re: Baren Digest V25 #2413 I'm enjoying the comments on the Shunga exchange! Almost laughed my ass off at Mike's communique, too, but couldn't get rid of it that easily. Isn't it funny that I think my spouse will be fascinated with this whole project?? Could gender be an issue here? LOL Please, someone drop out of #19 so I can get in! Missing sign-up just because I was suffering through a fantastic trip to So. Italy is patently unfair!! Thanks for letting me know about the sign-up Mike - I am on the back-up list. Any tricks on how to change the handle on the tool so i don't get blisters on the palm of my hand? I love the steel of the japanese tools but the handles just don't seem to fit my western sized paws unlike the western handles which seem to fit. Might be the old engraving handles feel right who knows. I might be able to put the 1mm "v" & "u" in an engraving tool handle. I don't use the other sized tools as much so i don't get a blister from them. john "of the large handed furry press" center ------------------------------ From: Julio.Rodriguez#walgreens.com Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 12:26:30 -0500 Subject: [Baren 23131] Re: very ninor problem John..I usually slide a very fine (paper thin) sliver of waste wood from my carving inside the metal ferrule to keep a tight fit on the handle...that usually does the job for a while... The ferrule can be dimpled with a chisel and the tap of a hammer, or a little slip of paper can be adhered to the wood underneath. Any tricks on how to change the handle on the tool so i don't get blisters on the palm of my hand? Make sure the tool is sharp. If it IS sharp, don't carve so deep. A sharp 1mm V or U offers virtually NO resistance in cherry or maple. If the tool really is sharp and still producing blisters, take some sandpaper to the offending edges. My 2 cents... - -- Mike Mike Lyon mailto:mikelyon#mlyon.com http://www.mlyon.com ------------------------------ From: "Maria Arango" Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 11:41:18 -0700 Subject: [Baren 23133] Re: very ninor problem John, I cut and sand all the wooden handles to fit my hand. I pretty much "draw" with the chisels, so I really need a comfortable handle. Another strategy is to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy "plastic dip" for making "handles" on metal or wooden implements. Dip your favorite tool into the "dip" let dry and now you have a softer (and yellow!) handle. Do it again and again and now you have a nicely padded handle. And I agree that Japanese tools need a lesson from Flexcut in making handles, but ooooooooohhhh...the steel... Oh well in an effort to protect your soft baby like skin you could give up carving and take up poetry..... ;-) However, I suggest you do what I do when I have to do lots of carving, get a good pair of mechanics gloves which fit fairly snug, but not so snug they cut your circulation. Or similarly anti-vibration gloves with padded palms, Lee Valley sells a pair for a nice price. They have the fingers cut out too for better feel and control of your tool. I used to get nasty blisters or abrade my skin right thru before I started carving with gloves on.
