Hi,
I will be going at the SGC conference in New Brunswick, New Jersey. My
only day is Friday March 19.

That is when Roberta Waddell , Curator of the NYC Public Library Print
Collection, will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the one
who acquired the Baren "Remembering the 911 Firemen" portfolio for the NYC
collection.

The entire SCG conference is from March 17-20. Theme:3D---Diversity
Discourse Dimension.

Congrats to Sarah for being part of their NYC print exhibit.

Henry French, welcome to Baren. Your work is wonderful and you will be an
excellent addition to exchanges. This is a varied group and you will find
many who use presses, oil inks and western papers. Our founder, exquisite
craftsman David Bull, lives in Japan and brought this group about due to his
interest in eastern hanga techniques. All you need to belong is an interest
in woodcut. But if you desire to learn Hanga this is a good place to start.
It is wonderful to have another artist living in Europe, you will add a lot.

I am working on my reduction print and have run about 40 prints, first
color. Am letting them dry because we have errand day and ther things to
accomplish. I have heard that should not be a problem when I go to print
again, just rewet them and go, I hope so. I wanted a strong first color and
to acheive that I applied heavy pigment and a lot of pressure. I have to
stand in my garage space so shoulder pressure is easier than when I sit. I
am wondering tho about this Baren I have. I tried the wooden spoon that was
hanging there just to see and it works almost better to get the color to
transfer. So the question is would this new ball bearing baren i have heard
about work better to get strong color in one pass? Mike you declared my
baren "crap" at the summit, you probably do not remember, but i am beginning
to think you were right????

Sorry about 2 posts. I took a look at the mall and am wondering if anyone
has tried the korokoro ball bearing baren? There was no feedback listed.

Hi folks, somehow I sent two monkeys to Shireen (she was nice enough to send
the extra one back) but I am wondering if there is someone I inadvertently did
not send to. Please let me know if you are on the year of the monkey list
and have not yet received a print from me.
PLUS, the monkeys in my mailbox are continually wonderful, thank you
everyone!
best wishes

You're right -- I don't remember, but it does sound like something I might
say if you were using one of those Daniel Smith variety or something... I
have several ball ball bearing baren and the Korokoro Baren from
http://barenforum.org/mall/products/barens.php is my current favorite
(after my hon baren, of course) -- you can get densest and most even color
possible (based on what you brush onto your block) in one pass with minimum
effort -- I keep mine oiled lightly with WD-40 as I worry that the moisture
in the paper may eventually corrode the balls... No sign of corrosion
after only a month or two of use, though.

Welcome Harry! You have come to the right place. I am a oily
woodblock person, too, who happens to still prefer the look of the old
fashioned oil base ink. I am trying the new waterbased products, and
have been trying them ever since they came out 20 or more years ago,
but they still don't quite equal the look of the oil ink on paper. I
am a hanga neophyte, and trying to learn this most difficult way in the
world to make a woodblock print.

I am currently reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and I
believe the setting is right near where you live, so I feel like we are
neighbors. Isn't it amazing what a little imagination can do? Enjoyed
your page and look forward to your participation in our exchanges.

ANNOUNCEMENT: More LPE II work has come in - John Center, you're
prints are safe and sound.

I think there was a misunderstanding about the Arches 88. It will only
disintegrate if you leave it to soak in the water. As long as you dip
and blot or spray it, or brush it it will behave as any other paper.
It is just that, as a waterleaf, with little or no internal sizing, you
have to handle it differently than you would BFK, for instance. BFK
you could let soak for a week and it would still be there. A bit slimy
perhaps, maybe with little green people cohabiting, but it would still
be there.

Happy Printing!

I have two of them. The only problem I have had is the tiny screws would get
loose and dig into the paper. A little "Lock-tite" and that problem was
solved. My students fight over the one I let them use.
I love using mine and now use my presses very seldom.
