Tonight was the opening of the Western Australian Printmedia Awards
2004 at the UWA Cullity Gallery. 72 entries listed in the sales
catalogue and a very professionally produced history booklet as it is
our 30th Anniversary although printmaking has been at the University
since the early 1900's with Henri van Raalte and AB Webb.

But I AM LIVID....ANGRY

it is after midnight and there is no way I
can sleep yet.........


I entered my Baren Large Print Exchange "Colour My World" which is a
two block calligraphed piece printed in hanga.


In the sales catalogue that I didn't get until I was on my way out of
the exhibition and read it when I got home, but under my print there
was "Woodblock & hand coloured".......... The B----Cheek...... I am
still so angry.


I have written a "Correction" to go under my Print which will read:


"Jan Telfer's Woodblock....

      The two layers of lettering are cut out of two wood blocks AND 

PRINTED IN WATERCOLOUR PIGMENTS (IN THE JAPANESE HANGA TECHNIQUE)


This is NOT a "hand coloured" print."


Do you think that may "get the message across"? And these people are
printmakers!!!! I ask you.


Still wide awake at 1am!!! I will be waiting on the doorstep tomorrow
at 12 noon with my correction notice!


PS The winners were a monoprint screenprint of text painted over with
cream paint so that it was difficult to read and the second one was
very fine white screenprinted geometric patterns on about 30 (6" x 6")
white papers.

Dear Jan, I feel your disappointment :( Those terrible, bad, bad
people who desperately need to be educated! Looks like they meant
to say "Woodblock - Hand Printed". But even that isn't descriptive
enough to explain the hanga process.

Now get yourself some chamomile tea and write some happy haiku!

Sorry Jan. I feel your pain with the print being misrepresented.

Tomorrow will be better!

We all could probably get together and write a book about such things. But
we have better things to do--cut and print.

My sympathies, Jan. It is frustrating to have to (not only) educate people
about prints - but then have to educate printmakers about hanga. I know of
people who were nearly refused membership in printmaker's organizations
because the margins on their hanga prints were "too narrow". Yikes!

Hang in there - or "hanga" in there!

Hi All,

Today I went back to our Western Australian Print Media Awards before
opening time to wait with my "note".....
Also waiting were two of my old friends who were going to be
supervising this afternoon and agreed with my note...
I have now stuck it under my woodblock..........they too had a few
disappointments about the exhibition standard... many of the prints
were from current tertiary students who had put primary/basic type
prints into the exhibition....eg. monoprints of "fingerpainting" and
scorched iron "prints" and minimalistic lino prints but there were also
some excellent works.....you know what I mean.....my woodblock friend
Emi Ninosecki had two hanga prints in geometric patterns one with added
lithography which were good. But the day eventually turned out well as
we three had a good chat.... when you are not on a committee here with
printmakers you loose touch a bit as there are no special meetings only
workshops which are worth going to too.

I came away thinking....am I going in the right direction with my work
as 95% of subject matter was minimalistic geometric non realistic
"stuff"? I thought about it a bit and as I carved my last hanga block
for Exchange #21 this afternoon I thought "No..... I'll just do my own
thing and do the best I can carving and printing and then reassess my
situation after my exhibition next year.... end of March we think......
then I'll rethink again. " I'd like to be less direct, less tight,
less realistic so I may start experimenting with some of my old printed
proofs and see what happens.

But "Hand Coloured" that really made my blood boil!!!!!!
