Barbara,

Welcome to Old Blocks R Us. I don't know about rescuing them in the
sense that you can make better art work out of them, maybe cut them up
and make a puzzle print - that might have possibilities - Prints a la
Maria. Or over printing them to see what happens and using it as
background for something else or printing on canvas and using it as
underpainting. But, where I excel (ahem) is making other things out of
them: tiling a door, tiling a folding screen, a table top, a headboard,
making trivets for Xmas gifts - Maybe we could start a business doing
the latter, do you think we could be as successful as the Painter of
Light has been? He has proven there really is no need to have art
involved in selling art.

You must be feeling better - you've surfaced again. Welcome back
amongst the living.

For those receiving the digest, part of Barbara's message was not
included in the html version of the digest. So here it is in case you
are wondering what she was talking about regarding the restoration of
old damaged lino blocks.

Greetings:

I am in need of advice. I am an artist/printmaker working with the
curator at he Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs, MS. Recently we
uncrated over 200 of Anderson's lino blocks dating back to the 1940's.
The smallest are 8 by 10 inches and the largest are almost 7 feet in
length. Sadly, many are dry, cracked and brittle. Some are mounted on
board, others are not.

I have been asked to pull a print for archival purposes from as many of
the blocks as possible. But before I attempt anything I have several
concerns.

Is there anyway to treat the blocks before printing to make them more
flexible?

What is the best way of cleaning the blocks? Would water further dry
them?
(Some seem to be encrusted with old water-based inks)

What is the best inks to use in printing- by hand of course?

Is there anything that can be done to preserve the plates?

What is the best way to store the plates?

I would appreciate any advise or referrals.

I wanted to double check on the subject.

Was there any final call on whether it is to be all four elements or any combination of the four.
