In case any of you are blown off course while crossing the Pacific, I'm
having a large show at the Museum
of the Aleutians from June 4 to September 4. The show will include
woodcuts, woodblock assemblages (used
blocks pegged and glued, sanded and painted, and framed), and grass
weavings. There is preliminary info at
www.aleutians.org, but when they have some photos of the exhibit up I'll
let you know.

Julio, thanks for the reminders about baren care. I remember a while
back there was a suggestion of some other material to use to cover a
baren, and I just searched the archives and couldn't find it. I know
it was some other kind of natural skin or wrapper (like corn husks,
maybe) that you could buy in the grocery story, but for the life of me
I can't remember. Does anyone remember? And if so, has anyone tried
it out? I have been curious about that ever since it was first brought
up.

Mike, if you aren't already, then you are to become famous for your
techniques. Beautiful work; I especially like Anthony--such a strong
image. The expression in his eyes is hauntingly mesmerizing.

I will be teaching moku hanga in Santa Fe (www.makingartsafely.com) the week
of July 19 to 23, if anyone is interested in a week long woodcut class, this
should be a good one. I haven't taught there before, but everyone says Santa
Fe is a great place.

The big news is that I have been invited to Japan this September! I am
working on an itinerary, but hope to teach at the Nagasawa Art Park Program
for a few weeks, then travel for a few more. I will go to Kyoto for sure,
and am debating if I should get to Tokyo, it sounds sort of scary! Can
anyone recommend woodcut-content travel destinations in Japan?

You are not kidding here...... in fact I counted 10 listed for 2004!!
Your machine takes all the chips and jagged edges off the physical
effort of hand carving! Do you have a little "slave" to do your
printing too? Only joking! I would love to see your machine actually
working. I suppose it is a bit like the rag trade and the car
industry among others that have machines to cut out the patterns and
the weaving industry to make them. A great evolution of the industrial
revolution.

Now we have computers to write and print for us. We even have infrared
commands for computers that you don't even need fingers to type which
is especially revolutionary for spinal injuried people and people with
physical disabilities. The life cycle of communication and industry.

When are you giving up your day job? ;-)

Congratulations, April -- does this mean that you got the residency? In
any event, it sounds GREAT! Maybe visit Richard Steiner in
Kyoto? Definitely David Bull in Tokyo, and David Stones in between -- all
three can advise you wonderful places to visit... And how about George
Jarvis? You will be so much safer in Tokyo than in New York! Will you
still be there in October? Sounds like it I'll be visiting for a week or
10 days in mid-to-late October -- will you still be there? Be fun to get
together somewhere exotic -- like David Bull's house (rudely inviting
ourselves over) for a cup of tea and a passionate discussion!

Congratulations to Ray for his upcoming exhibit and April for the woodcut
classes in Santa Fe/Japan....sounds like Japan is the place to be later
this year for a mini-Baren convention ???? ;-)

Mike, congratulations....wonderful prints....I so much like these new
images....the image of 'Sarah' has a wonderful appeal...like you want to
know what this person is thinking.. I wonder if years from now (maybe
after we are all gone to the great atelier in the sky) art collectors and
print enthusiasts will be debating 'Lyon' prints and possibly their
monetary value as to wether they were hand carved by the artist or machine
carved...kinda like the big issues with the Andy Warhol prints....of
course those of us in the Baren exchanges are lucky and have a heads up on
those greedy
print collectors !!!!

Mike, you are certainly a passionate printmaker. HOW IMPRESSIVE. My
favorite is Sarah reclining, love the fore ground and than well it is just
beautiful to see her lying there. One thing I have noticed about your work
is the difference between holding one in your hands and seeing it on a
computer screen. They are nice online but spectacular to see in person.
Ray, congrats on your show. WOW more fame in our midst,
Sarah, wow, you too are amazing.
It does sound like they might have a in convention in Japan. Don't we wish
we could all go. We can't even fit in a trip north on our boat least of all
Japan. Maybe I will finally have a roof on that house of mine.

Nah! Not much chance of anybody (present company excluded) debating or
even having any awareness of my work, I don't imagine... BUT... If they
did, don't you think the BIG question would be whether they were hand
printed by the artist or machine printed by a press with a master printer
at the helm? Whether the person who printed the image was the same person
who designed it?

Consider this: does it really make a difference to the ink and paper
whether the matrix (block in this case) was etched by acid, routed by
machine, gouged by blade, hardened by UV light, etc. etc. In relief prints
it's (usually) not the areas which print that are tooled, but only those
areas which DON'T print are touched by us. Think about that -- it's kinda
profound! :-) How the surface was etched (or built up) can often not be
deduced from evidence in the printed paper. I definitely feel that I have
designed and carved these new blocks just as surely as the ones
before. Usually my blocks are not a goal -- they are a means. For many of
us, the prints are the goal -- the product of our various labors. Mine are
entirely hand-pulled... uh... for the present time... At least until I
figure out a better, easier, more direct way from my mind to the world of
men! :-)

Mike, I agree with your assesment of what's important but you are selling
yourself short here....I remember reading about the problem with the
Warhol prints...that he was not involved or even around when some of the
editions were done and now the Warhol Foundation is not recognizing these
prints as authentic 'Warhol's' and thus they lose most of their previous
value.

The ebay auction market seems to be very receptive toward moku-hanga
printmakers...looks like the two 'hot' artists that bring in the most
money are Kiyoshi Saito and Paul Jacoulet....with prints selling anywhere
between $500-$3000 each. After that prints by the Yoshida's (Hiroshi &
Toshi) & Kawase Hasui sell for anywhere between $250-$1000 each.

Mike, are the two models standing up the same young women you used for
your shunga print ?
