Hello deck of cards participants.. there still seems to be one deck not
in house which we are waiting for. We have all been so extra patient.. and
we are just finalizing things.
Unfortunately, unlike other exchanges, because a box was made with the names
of the participants on it, we cannot drop out late comers... so we ought
to wait! arghh!
We thougth we had all the cards in, but apparently this was not so.
Anyways, id you didn't see the box yet, you can see it at www.monoprints.com/exchanges/cards.html

Bette is leaving on holiday tomorrow, and will be back in july sometime..

Jeanne, interesting about your left handed righted handed self. I always
thought i was right handed until I painted. One day the prof came in and I
had not noticed but i was painting with a brush in each hand, he laughed and
said artists are often ambidextrous. Weird. But than when i cooked hash
browns for the lodge on fathers day I was using a spatula in each hand, got
some odd looks from my co-workers, and I prefer to drop my hanga left handed
over right handed.
Well, Harry, I have a lot of drop off on the first run of this print. Got
about 7 out of 12. But it is the first run and also never used this paper
before. Also I am still pretty much a beginner and this is water media,
duh, watercolor where you do not get every one. Personally I am thrilled
and will be doing more tomorrow. If you get 32 out of 50 you do well. This
stuff is tricky at best. Let me see I had 2 that slipped, moved, after the
drop, think that is the new Baren oops have to get used to using it.
Dropped one upside down and the other well I do not know what icky thing
got on it????
That is the name of the game, you loose some. I am using a western paper and
love it. It is acid free and not as costly as those Japanese papers. so
for those who wonder, try what you can afford, that is decent, you may be
surprised. Oh by the by I am thrilled that I am getting what I think is a
presentable print. Sorry to be the verbal one but for those that are new to
hanga I think it helps to know others are where they are. And also to hear
about our mistakes, hang in there it is worth it. When I think about that
little print i did a year ago at the summit and look at this I know I am
coming along and those of you who saw that piece will understand. And it was
mailed in for the deck of cards. Had i realized i had so much time to do a
print I would have redone it and the print would be much nicer. Colleen you
have tried hard to get this together, some folks just are not good with
deadlines I guess.

I am looking for a catalog that has Mini tools available.
Arthritis is creeping up on me and I need some very small hand and power tools to do wood carving.
Would love to have some information as to where I can locate said tools.

PS. Is that cheating ????????

Jeanne,

Here is a link to the rotary tool that I use ->
http://www.turbocarver.com/
I found that regular 'dremmel' type tools
to be too cumbersome and awkward to use for my purposes even with the
flexible shaft attachment. The turbo carver is air driven, so you would
also need a compressor. It also whines like a dentist drill when it
runs - because it spins at 450,000 rpm!! (I listen to audio books
through a good set of headphones while carving, along with a dust mask &
eye protection). The bits (burs) cannot be found at regular hardware
stores because they use a 1/16" diameter shaft (Demmel types use a
1/8"). You can order burs online or I have been able to find them in
jewelry supply stores... just be sure to check the maximum rotation
speed listed on them (a 40,000 rpm burr will fly apart at 400,000+).

As to whether it's cheating or not.... I think it depends on what you're
claiming it to be. Using a rotary tool and then selling it as a
'traditionally carved Japanese woodcut print' would obviously be wrong.
I think as long as you're upfront about how the images where created
then it cannot be considered 'cheating'.

I'm still learning (as always :-) but so far I'm very happy with the
results that I have been able to achieve using the rotary tool.

I hope this helps you (and anybody else) out,

Chris Bailey

What beautiful prints. I am now in love with the bird
series. I put that link on my favorites page so I can
stare at the monitor and sigh in adoration.

Hi,

Will the exchange 22 sign up be starting July 1 or has there been some change?

Mike Lyon - our Exchange Coordinator-in-Chief - is away from home until
July 2nd. I'm not sure if he has good 'net access while he is
travelling, so unless he pops up and posts a message about the next
exchange, just hold your fire for a couple of days ...
