So how does the group reach an agreement on the theme? Is there a
process as it seems there are several good ideas on the table? I
would hope a choice could be made prior to the signup date so we can
decide if it is inspiring enough to join this exchange.

Thanks,
Thomas

Dear All,

I have not been checking Barenforum for a while, I've been too busy getting
ready for my trip to Japan. I plan to visit Dave, and possibly Dave: Bull
seems closer to my itinerary than Stones! Maybe I'll even visit Mike, who
will be in Japan around the same time.

I will be at the Nagasawa Art Park Residency program, on Awaji Island for
three weeks, then I will travel for two more. I'll give a full report when I
return!

You all might be interested to know that Keiji Shinohara has a show of New
Paintings and Woodblock prints at DFN Gallery, 176 Franklin Street, New York
from Sept. 8 to Oct 9.

best,

April

Thomas,
Mike Lyon who is the co-ordinator of the exchanges (volunteer job like all on baren)
will "harvest" all the emails with ideas for the themes and the one with the most interest or "votes" is chosen. So in this case, every vote does count. Of course it is one vote per person, so it does not help to vote more than once, however you can sure keep the exchange of ideas alive and encourage participation! This is an amazing site and really a democracy. The idea with the most votes wins every time.

Baren does have a council of 8 or so people who handle the behind the scenes stuff that keeps the site and list working well. If you have any concerns, go to the main baren page and click on administration and then group managers. Any one of us will take your ideas or concerns before the council, which is a separate email list. We give every idea concideration and of course are always open for offers of help. Those of us on the council all put in time every day to keep this site and list going strong, although most times no one is aware of it. Only huge problems or exciting opportunities bring us out of our little administration closet. The whole thing was started by Dave Bull, www.woodblock.com but after a couple of years it just got to be too much for one person to handle, it was taking all his time, thus the council was born and has been going strong for the last 4 years.
Very best to all,
Barbara/mall manager

Have a great trip April!

Tell us all about it when you return.
I have just seen Marco's portrait print in a gallery in San Francisco. No
wonder he isn't here. He is there in Tokyo .

Does anyone have experience with planing the wood blocks by hand? I
was considering getting a smoothing plane, but I am not sure if that is
a dead end road. I need to make rough wood smooth enough to carve and
print with.

Thanks,
Thomas

Are you printing by oil based or Japanese method? If by oil based method
sanding is all you have to do. Most of the time I sand down to 220 but that
can vary depending if I am doing a wood cut vs a wood engraving or if I want
the wood texture and grain to show.

I am told it is a horse of a different color if you are printing by Japanese
method -- as I don't I will leave it to those who do to explain the difference
and why.
