Catherine,

Very nice prints. I especially like "Ishiah". Great tones in the petals. I'm
kind of nearby, north of Marshalltown. Last week I stopped at Grinnell College
to see what was up in the Faulconer Gallery, and if you have a chance, I'd
strongly urge you or anyone near to see it. Its terrific, a South African
printmaker, William Kentridge. Mostly black and white, from small to large scale,
and inventive use of process. There's even a huge pair that seems to be an ink
painting, but the description reveals that it is letterpress printed! (of
special interest to me because that is what I use) There will be an artists talk on
Sat Nov.20, writer Susan Stewart 10am, William Kentridge 2pm, and discussion
after.

Warm congratulations to Sarah Hauser.

Catherine i enjoyed your prints very much. I especially liked the
backgrounds you are using in combination with your realistic subject matter,
very interesting. Did you use a map for the image behind the vase??? That
would seem to relate so much with history and also a feeling of another
world, something foreign to us who do not live in the east and are not
familiar with eastern culture.

I certainly appreciate not having a page up to share images, I had one and
it was taken away by the people who gave me the space with ony a weeks
notice, I just could not get to it fast enough to download it and transfer
it else where. It is so time consuming to do it yourself and I have just
not looked to hire it done. But for purposes other than sharing I do not
miss having one. But is sure is fun to look at others work online. so keep
sharing.

Hello!

I'll be in New York in November for a long weekend get-away. I'm planning
on visiting MoMA and Talas (the bookbinding supplies store), but I'm
wondering if anyone has any other recommendations?

If you're interested in meeting up please email me directly so that we can
figure out the details.

thanks,
emma

It's been quite some time since we added new products to the Mall, but
this morning, a new page went up with a very special new addition -
finally we have a good, solid supply of quality bamboo skins!

http://www.barenforum.org/mall/products/goto_takenokawa.php

These are supplied to us by Mr. Kikuhide Goto, the same man who makes
the 'hon' barens in the Mall. Getting good quality bamboo skins is
vital to his whole job, so he's pretty good at hunting them down, and
he has finally agreed to make them available for us ...

And if you've been buying them from other places overseas, the price is
going to make your eyes pop!

Hi Catherine

I'm curious about your work, and wanted to ask you a couple of questions;
* Do you find that the computer deadens the image or sterilizes the
image to some degree?
* If so do you hand cut your prints to remove any possible
sterilization and add in a more human touch? Is it the tactility of the
medium that made you choose it over other printmaking methods or just using
photoshop and outputting from a large printer?
* If the process of using the computer deadens the image, have you
(considered using) or used the camera lucida, (camera obscura) or some
other method which would allow you to place more of your hand skills into
the work? if so how did it go in contrast to the computer based images?

All the questions really hang on what you answer to the first question, so
pologies in advance if none of this makes sense (seemed to me to be better
to post them all at once).

Do you know the work of the scottish printmaker Ashley Cook? she uses
screen print and photo montage but the effect at least as far as viewing
the work online at least, seems not to dissimilar. Scale probably makes the
difference though...
