Congratulations April and Mike. I always check sites out whenever they
are posted on Baren..... it makes me feel like I am still part of this
wonderful woodblock fraternity ...... thank goodness for my
g.g.g.grandfather's computer knowledge and those who have improved
computer technology.

Great...I'll go anywhere..... It would be nice to host one. Perth is
on the other side of the world and we have very limited woodblock
printing expertise here....we do have the odd one or two with Gallery
East's David Forrest somewhat of an expert on Eastern Japanese
woodblock prints......

Summer today 42oC and power failures all over the state, but today's
temperature was not very common..... it was 50oC in the far north of
the state today. Better in late spring or early autumn.

But our Customs Dept would have a pink fit with so many woodblock
printmakers coming in with wood..... it would probably be all
confiscated!!

I'll travel........

Cheers,

Barbara, I, for one, would love to see us in the mountains for a
Summit. The Rockies or somewhere in the Appalachians would be
enticing.

Want to hear something interesting I did recently that was fun? My
brother in law works in the properties department on sets for films,
and recently he was part of the crew for a film that actor William H.
Macy is starring in. My nephew, who also works on the film set crews
was sending me snapshots he took behind scenes of Macy and some of the
other actors. I took one of the snapshots, cropped Macy's face in
Photoshop, enlarged it, then printed it out in black and white and used
it as a guide to make a woodcut of him. I worked on it feverishly,
then sent it out to California to my brother in law, asking if he'd
give it to the actor, which he did. I wish I had a snapshot of him
holding the woodcut, but that part didn't happen because no one was
around with a camera (including my brother in law). However, I hear
from the grapevine he is going to put it in his den and that he really
likes it and is sending me a signed photo with thanks. I tested the
woodcut on a few people to see if I got Macy's likeness before sending
it out to California, and people knew who it was without me telling
them. I'm hoping more opportunities arise to surprise actors
(through my brother in law) as I love doing black and white woodcut
portraits. :-)

If anyone is interested in reading about the print collections in the
places that will be giving tours during the SGC conference, the articles
are now online at www.marylandprintmakers.org

Re/ another summit: Oh dear, here I go again: would you be interested
in having it at my place? I have enough room for a lot of people to
print and I know where to go to get tables and chairs for cheap. There
is a state campground not far, and a few people could camp out
upstairs. If we have it in July or Aug the weather might cooperate - if
it gets hot I have a/c. The only problem is that I am not in middle
America - I am in a blue state - WA, a hotbed of screaming, bleeding
heart liberal environmentalist wonderful kind of loving people. The
good news is that the Portland Airport is only 20 minutes away.
Nothing is walking distance, like for lunch - but, Starbucks and
several fast food choices are a 5 minute drive.

There is one caveat though: Barbara and Wanda and Renee and anyone else
from the NW will have to help me organize it :-)

Cheers!

Subject: [Baren 27075] Bareners in Simply Haiku online!
Send Message: To this poster

Dear Bareners,

I'm pleased to announce the release of the Spring 2005 Simply Haiku
online magazine of English genres of Japanese short-form poetry and
haiga.

Six Bareners are featured with their moku-hanga woodblock prints from
the Exchange #15 series. Maria Arango, Carole Baker, Barbara Mason,
Nancy Osadchuk, Wanda Robertson, and Jan Telfer. I have selected a
modern-waka poem to accompany each print to complete the haiga (art and
poetry) feature. On the contents page in the right hand column under
"Haiga - Traditional Art with Haiku" at: http://www.SimpyHaiku.com

I was unable to feature all 30 artists from this exchange in one issue,
so please forgive me for not being able to do so. The good news is that
there are numerous links that take the viewer directly to the Exchange
#15 page to see ALL the artist's prints and to offer excellent
world-wide exposure for woodblock printmaking and our Barenforum!

As I've said in the past, I'm not sure how long I will be able to
continue to promote Moku-Hanga printmaking at Simply Haiku, so I am very
grateful to our chief editor, Robert Wilson, for allowing me this
rewarding and exciting opportunity. I shall continue to feature as many
moku-hanga printmakers as I can. I also happily encourage your
submissions for publication as well.

Thank you and Warm Regards.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TODAY TO WANDA ROBERTSON!!!

Sharri,

"The only problem is that I am not in middle America - I am in a blue

is that a bad thing?....

I don't wanna open a can of worms...but I am in a few artistic groups
and for some reason in the past 2 or 3 days politics have been brought
up in all of them...

and frankly I'm just getting sick of it...I could careless if you are
blue or red...

I realize this is an open forum...and I don't mind talking politics
but...lets not resort to name calling...

sorry about the can of worms...

Cheers,

GRAND IDEA!

I have thought about Vegas too, cheap to fly to and centrally located (in
the world, that is).
The university here has a great printmaking department and the chair of the
art dept is a printmaker; I am sure they would not only make the printmaking
studios available to us, but also there is the possibility of using the
dorms as housing. The main drawback I see is that it would have to be in the
summer and it gets up to around 110 F around these parts, which could
possibly kill some Baren members and I would hate to be responsible for
that. Well, that and the embarrassing lack of "art rich" places to visit
while here.

In any case, I would love to come to Washington!

Subject: [Baren 27081] Sharri's studio
Send Message: To this poster

Friends,
I have to tell you Sharri's studio is to die for....lots of room and in the most beautiful woodland setting. About an hour from my house but freeway almost all the way. Not as big as Mike's place, but not as hot and humid either. Even though she is close to town you would not know it if you were in her yard....just trees and more trees and a deck that wraps half way around the house. Very nice. Portland is between Sharri and myself, but it is a small city. 680,000 in the city limits. Vancouver is about 300,000.
I will help plan it if we agree on Vancouver Washington for the next summit. Some can camp here, I have a big house but no real extra bedrooms, just fold out couches. Large yard though. I think we could make this work. Maurice Fykes is in Vancouver, Wanda is 1 1/2 hrs southeast of Sharri and Renee is east toward Mt. Hood about 1 hour. There are a few other bareners here, Kent is in the city of Portland proper and Bobby is somewhere in the middle also as is Brian Lockyear, Suzi Martin is out there south somwhere, about an hour.....have I missed anyone who lives close? Robert Canaga is in Eugene and there are probaly more within a couple of hours away...Barbara Patera is in Issaquah, Seems to me there are enough baren people within driving distance to pull this off. I am counting 11 including Sharri...sounds like a good starting number.
Best to all,
Barbara
