Did I give a report on my Union College trip? I had a fabulous time, stayed
at the best suite in the best hotel in Schenectady and went out for sushi
and sake with Mike Lyon and Sandy Wimer. It was pretty funny that the
college got the visiting printmaker the Presidential Suite at the Proctor
Hotel! Then again, Schenectady doesn't have a lot of visits from the
President.

In any case, it was a very nice hotel, and the sushi wasn't bad either! The
best was the company, though. Mike Lyon is always a pleasure, and I enjoyed
his company in Schenectady as I did in Kyoto! I discovered that he is a
better baren-wrapper than I am...he re-wrapped my poor baren, a new one I
got in Japan, which was already suffering many holes. Sandy Wimer, the
printmaking teacher, went all out for moku hanga, teaching her students and
organizing the show. She did not realize what she was getting into when she
started learning moku hanga!! She thought it was just another printmaking
technique!

I put photos on my website at www.aprilvollmer.com/union

And Union College website is
http://www.union.edu/PUBLIC/AVADEPT/mokuhanga.html

Best,

April

There is another way of doing it, go to
http://www.techniks.com/information.htm#pnpwetinfo
and they have two types of transfer 'paper' used for making printed
circuit boards. Its an iron on transfer paper made specifically for
laser jet printers. Once you get the hang of it it's easy to transfer
any design using it. It works really well when making copper or other
etchings. I use it all the time for circuit boards and other designs.
The transfer should also work with wood as laser printers work by having
iron oxide embedded in fusible plastic. The plastic should fuse to just
about anything as long as it is clean...

Colleen,

I'd love to have a few decks of card. I'll give my permission for copyright.
Let me know the details, and how much in $ US is three euros? The answer to
this question will determine how many decks I can order!

Tom K,
What beautiful work! Very smooth, deep colors and even several bokashi,
and those nice rich blacks. I have to admit I'm a bit envious,
especially about those blacks. Needless to say, I am impressed. A
very nice series, too. Are you sure you weren't a hanga printer in a
previous life?? Look forward to seeing more.

Colleen,
Of course, count me in on the card thing. I'll want at least 3 decks
when you get them.

Marilynn,
Don't give up - Barbara will get you on that yahoo list, she has
probably been under-whelmed, as usual :-)

Cheers to all,
Sharri

Go for it, permission to use my card for whatever you wish.
Your music prints are so neat. Always wanted to inquire; since you do so many prints related to music, do you play an instrument????

Hello Sharri and Andrew. I have used heat to do transfers, but as Sharri
notes, it sometimes does not get quite the detail one would want ... it is
a bit fussy. The nice thing about d-limonene is that it is relatively
non-toxic, and it always gave results as good as using lacquer thinner or
acetone. But those new toners must employ some sort of plastic that is not
soluble in d-limonene ... pity.

That transfer paper looks very interesting. I wonder if it would hold up as
a resist for etching steel in copper sulfate and salt ... something else to
experiment with.

Cheers ...... Charles
