Hi,
These are my 7 woodblock prints that are on exhibit now until June at the
JCC of Tarrytown, NY. They are the 7 Species of Deuteronomy----Wheat, Barley,
Grapes, Olives, Pomegranates, Figs, and Dates.

I'll talk about Baren and have the Baren brochure available when I do the
slide/lecture on April 21.
More about the slide/lecture as the time approaches.

If you like Lynd Ward, you will also like Laurence Hyde's "Southern Cross."
The State University of New York - Buffalo library has a nice selection of
woodcut novels. They were very popular in the early 20th century. Maybe it's time
we bring them back?

I found another of those honing gizmo's that Marilynn brought up. This
one is called a Slip Strop and is on page 30 of the Highland Hardware
catalog for $9.99 or on line at $12.99. Wonder why that is? Maybe
someone out there in Baren land can tell me. You can check it out at:

PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5312

If the above link doesn't work start at www.highlandhardware.com and
type in product #125100.

Cheers!

there is a modern reprint of God's Man. Done rather poorly as it is printed
with half tones. There was also one printed in the 70's which was done much
better.

I need a bit of assistance here tonight, and perhaps some of the
hundreds of people on [Baren] can help out. I have been working on the
idea for what I hope can be an interesting new series in my 'Hyakunin
Issho' newsletter (with an accompanying section on the website), but to
try it out properly, I need some 'sample' content.

Rather than get into a long explanation of what I am planning, what I
would like some of you to do - if you have a few minutes - is simply
'reply' to the question/comment I am going to pose in a second.

But ... I would like you to 'reply' within the framework of a couple of
rules. (Please bear with me, this will all make sense later ...)

1) No single line, short clipped replies, no matter how easy your idea
is ...

2) No extended replies, no matter how complex your idea is ...

3) Maybe think of an analogy to the classical concept of a debate -
presentations/responses must fall within a strictly controlled time
slot. This really forces people to think out clearly what is the most
important argument/opinion that they want to say/present.

Anyway, 'nuff preparation. Just for fun, if any of you feel that you
have something to say in reply to this little post, please do so (on or
off list, as you choose) keeping your responses to a single paragraph
of just under 150 words. You may agree with it, disagree with it,
answer it, extend the thought, offer another insight ... anything.

Re: this image from the 'shin-hanga' genre of Japanese woodblock prints:
http://woodblock.com/temporary/unidentified.jpg

The series of prints that include the one shown in this image was
recently described by an expert on the subject as: "... containing the
essence of shin hanga ..." Those of us who know something of the
history of the production and distribution of these prints however, may
wonder what that statement really means. At the time of the production
of such prints (early 20th century), scenery like this was already
cliched and out-of-date, but Hasegawa and Watanabe, the two major
shin-hanga producers, knew what their customers wanted - images of
Japan that matched the 'exotic' and 'quaint' mental impressions that
they had of this country - and by all reports, they were extremely
successful at it. How though, can we now seriously give any credence to
an art form when we know that its single apparent purpose was to suck
dollars out of tourists?

Thanks!
