Or just plain 'ol petroleum jelly, commonly known as Vaseline.

A good glob of vaesline around the outside of the can's lip also serves too
keep out air, and so help keep ink from forming a skin.

Mike,

Congratulations on your latest accomplishments, very well deserved !!!!

I enjoyed reading the most excellent article at the Ukiyoe Gallery.......I
have had communications with Thomas Crossland and he has been very helpful
on some of my research with Japanese prints (he is a big fan of Koson's
crow prints).

Regarding the statement:

More importantly, however--due to the "destructive" nature of the
successive carving of a single block, collectors are insured that once the
initial "edition" is completed of a "reduction carved" print that NO
future editions can ever be produced.

I was wondering in lieu of our recent list discussions about editioning
and second editions, etc....since the 'matrix' & color separations for
your prints are stored in the computer and the instructions set for the
robot carver are also saved...there is no reason why you could not create
another set of blocks that would be somewhat 'identical' to the original
and do a second edition....while you may not want to revisit old work, you
may want to keep your work to first edition only..etc...this practice of
carving new blocks for new editions was and is a common and respectable
practice in the Japanese printmaking tradition.....

thanks....Julio Rodriguez (Skokie, Illinois)

I've only actually 'done' one machine-assisted reduction print -- that's
"Mia", the double oban nude... All my other machine-assisted carvings have
been multi-block (so far, at least)... For me it's faster and easier to
machine multi-blocks than to calculate the somewhat more complex tool-paths
for reduction carving, and then, regardless whether machine carved or hand
carved, pause printing while doing additional carving... Any such a
recarving would, for my purposes, be a subsequent or later edition (same as
printing a subsequent edition from a non-canceled block set), but I have NO
interest in revisiting any of my printings and it is unlikely (read "never
gonna happen") that I'd ever go back to repeat an edition... I'm really
only interested in movin' ahead, "respectable practice" or no... :)

-- Mike

PS to steal a line from "Legally Blonde" (no -- not "I object!") thanks to
all for the "snaps"!

In relation to recent discussions - the most recent copy of Art on Paper
has an article about Damien Hirst's digital prints. It seems people are so
crazy about his paintings that they buy digital reproductions, which are
printed in limited editions and sold for $20,000. These are digital prints
(not made by him), which are reproductions of paintings (also not made by
him)! He apparently has assistants to do all his work for him.

Please forgive this post, which lacks any printmaking
context.
After years of thinking about it, I am making my first
trip to the States - California - with my family this
summer. If you know of any comfortable but
not-too-expensive accommodation that would suit a
roving family looking for stop-offs between LA and SF,
would you please contact me OFF LIST.
V. Sorry about this, but I'l looking for a little
local knowledge. I promise I'll post something about
woodblock printing soon.
Andy

To all you oily folk, I would like to add to Maria's tip to put a
little gel reducer around the rim of the ink can - and in addition,
please skim the ink out with a flat headed palette knife. In other
words, do not dig into the ink - leave a nice smooth top on it after
you've taken what you need. That way there is less surface to dry and
your ink will last mucho longer, and you won't be digging those little
dry goobies out of your ink in the future. (You know those guys, they
get in your rolled out ink and wreak havoc.)

Cheers!
