bareners- seconding Maria and Dan , I always draw directly on the block.
if reversing of image is a problem , look in a mirror at your subject .
Waxed paper works very well to transfer images to other blocks or to any surface
like cars, walls etc.
Why waste all that time , money , energy and health on transfering , when direct
drawing is so simple and spontaneous ?

Le Green, I really enjoyed your slide show. Congratulations. Looks like a lot of work and beautifully done.
When I studied printmaking a lot of the kids put images from anywhere, not original on the blocks. It was taught as a course on technique. For me I did not care because I used original imagery and had a ball. Drawing direct is very spontaneous and surprising. I will have to give a thought to printing out the magery and transfering it to a second block. Maybe in my next life when I have more time.

I'm going to try Matt's rives heavyweight for my Kamakura Buddha print.
(It's hard not to just copy everything your teacher does!) I hope to start
printing this afternoon, so check back on the blog after your Chicago trip
and you'll be able to see how it works out. I've read some of the postings
in the archives and have seen that people's tastes in paper is just as varied as
people's tastes in anything else!

On the topic of teachers, I just want to say to anyone who is thinking of
trying moku hanga that taking a workshop is a terrific jump-start. I learned
a lot from Matt's words and his printed materials and from the hands-on work
I did, but it was more than that. There seemed to be some mysterious kind of
osmosis involved, too. He did some printing while the workshop was in
session, just quietly on the side, and somehow I picked up a visceral
feeling for how the baren sounds when it's held properly and what the right
amount of pigment looks like as the maru bake passes over the block and how
the knife is held - stuff I didn't know I was learning until I tried it at
home. Matt is still teaching me long after the workshop ended!

And Le Green, what a huge undertaking! Congratulations on the installation.

There are as many papers to choose from as there are Baren members on this
list ;;-)

I too have used Rives for most of my prints and it does the job well as
long as you don't need to do many impressions. Probably got the
idea to use Rives for Moku Hanga from Matt Brown too as I have a few of
his prints. For the last few exchanges I have turned to the Japanese hosho
because I think it has more absorbancy and greater strength to survive
multiple impressions. The price is quite higher per sheet.

A slip of wax paper ( I use the waxy paper from Dunkin Donuts) inserted
between the baren and the back of your paper goes a long way to prevent
piling and for ease of printing when using Rives Heavy..
