Had a call from printmaker Ryusei Okamoto this evening; he was letting
me know about an exhibition he has coming up next week.

That's not of much interest to [Baren] members, as I doubt many of you
can make it to Tokyo next weekend, but he also let me know about two
new pages on his website - showing his process of carving and printing.

Carving:

Printing (done for him by a professional printer):

The text accompanying the photos is all Japanese I'm afraid, but I
think you should be able to follow along pretty well anyway. If there
is something particular you can't figure out, just ask ...

And here's the front of his website, which I have posted here before ...

so here are some answers to some of your questions...

the steamroller gives you a nice even pressure over the print whereas with plywood and a car you will get more pressure under where the two tires are.

first we lay down one of the those pads you put under a rug and then a piece of plywood with markings on it for the paper and the plates so they will lie correctly, then once the plate in inked and the paper put over it, we cover it with two blankets, and then another thicker blanket and lastly a rug upside down so the pressure from the steamroller doesn't destroy the blankets.

the lino is from a mail order place called "dick blix" or something like that...i'm not exactly sure how its spelled.

yes we did lots of tests last year, even renting the steamroller for an extra day a week before the event to make sure it all worked, which was a good idea as there were kinks to work out, such as slippage and how much ink to use.

last year there were 12 plates by different artists, this year there are 16. each plate is printed 3 times, one for the center to auction off at the fundraiser that evening, one for each artist sponsor (the sponsor gives a donation to the center), and lastly one for the artist.

we close off a block and have lots of artists, vendors, food and other things like a band too...its a lot of fun. again, i hope some of you bareners can make it to the event.

Dave,
What is he using for the snow? Is this just white pigment? It looks transparent but must be opaque or it would not sit on top of the other ink.
Great site, I really enjoyed it. I am surpsised he carved all the lines with the coat black...so I assume you can see them in the print where we cannot on the internet.
