I apologize again for my tardiness with the exchange #27 prints but WOOOHOOO! they are done and drying. I will mail them out in the morning! I am not completely happy with the end results, but I have to accept what I can do for now. My experience is very limited in this area and I still have a million things to learn in moku hanga. I love the process, just need to refine the techniques. Ok people. Print...right now...

Re Baren 30112] best ink for linoleum (deborah harris)
I have always found Graphic Chemicals Litho inks great for lino cuts,
especially the editioning black, but we use relief inks for class purposes.
You do need to keep your tools very sharp for lino, they seem to blunt
faster on lino due to the composition of the lino. If your lines are filling
in try adding some magnesium carbonate to the ink. This stiffens it, and
works very well with most oil based block inks. In my experience
water-soluble inks are not as satifactory to use as the oil, but I guess its
a matter of personal preference in the end. Every few prints I get the
students to clean their block by running it through uninked onto newsprint.
This helps it from filling in

Deborah,

A few weeks back there was a good discussion about using different
materials for your tympan when using a press for relief work.....having a
hard surface (like plexi, plywood or hard cardboard) next to the paper was
recommended vs the use of blankets or other surfaces that give. What
material are you using ?

Could this be having an impact on your less-than-crisp lines ?

thanks...Julio Rodriguez

hello to you all!
Here is a link to my Exchange #27. If you would rather wait till you get one to see it, please don't click the link. I am not so happy about the colors, but I have more plans for these blocks in the future. I am definately going to print one of the colors in a different order than I did here. Anyway, look or don't if you want to be surprised.

Julio,
Thanks for your interest. I don't use blankets. I used to use book
binders board - a hard cardboard. Now I don't use anything except a piece
of paper on the bottom and top. So it's a very hard surface. Mostly I get
good prints. I have been having trouble with this one recent block. I
even replaced the bed with brand new one. I can only assume that there is
something about the way it is carved that is causing problems.

Dear Jill,
I bought some GC Litho ink - it was VERY stiff. I really couldn't roll it
out at all. Do you use a medium? Where do you get magnesium carbonate and
how do you add it to the ink. Many thanks for your interest.
