Hi, Bareners...
The Madison printmaking world is getting fired up for the southernGraphics conference.
I just read that another gallery "opened in time" for the conference.
It's a pricy ticket...
I finally got to check the schedule and see what all was going on.
I've gone to various other conferences set up the same way...
some have been great, informative, helped get people over to new paths...
others were just flash.
Does SouthernGraphics have a track record?
What can one expect to bring home from it?
If you're only an artist, not an educator, is it worth the price of admission?
What will one gain, art-wise...intellectually.....?
Or is it mostly an opportunity to see new products and meet up with old friends?

Hey, I did not vote down any presented theme because it was political and I
do not think most of us did. I simply like the idea of doing a nude
exchange. I do not think a recount is needed, we had a fair count the first
time. If some want to do causes or some other exchange that would include
personal points of view than it can be presented once again. Most certainly
there will be another themed exchange in the future and the idea seems to
have sparked an interest in many on this list. I think more just wanted to
do a nude, period. For me it had nothing to do with politics. And I would
think most of us would agree that violence and the horrors of war often
bring out inhumane conduct and human suffering. But on the flip side, I live
in a world surrounded by beauty. I choose to think on the beauty and the
good and the wonder of just being alive and able to walk on a sunny beach
under a blue sky. I think the human figure is a thing of beauty and look
forward to getting into an exchange where I can reflect that. And if you
think doing nudes is not controversial than think again. I was part of a
painting class that had a lot of pro artists in it. We were asked to hang a
show in a small town city hall. The prof arranged for a framer to mat and
or frame pieces for this show. He personally asked me to hang a full
frontal female nude. I told him I would pay only to have it matted because
something told me there might be an objection to it. Sure enough some one
complained that nudes in city hall were inapropriate and that school
children walked through. My piece was pulled off the wall and placed in a
bin because it was too graphic. Gads graphic??? It was definitely not
highly detailed, but there was a dark brush stroke between her legs and her
breasts were outlined, she was standing holding a pot over her head. So
folks believe it or not the nude is a controversial subject.
Have a good day and relax we are open to a lot of theme ideas and I would
think over time causes will come forward and become a theme.

After 6 years I finally finished my studio tour page on the website; nothing
big...which is why I kept putting it off!
Here is the page:
http://1000woodcuts.com/studio/insidestudio.html

Also, I forgot to mention that if you or your website have direct links to
some of my studio notes and other interior pages, those might have changed.
Sorry about that but the "remodeling" was long overdue.

Annie, I admire your methodical pre-thought of your prints, even though
that's not the way I work.

Maria

Anyone within a tank of gas of Buffalo might want to take a trip to the Burchfield Penney gallery to see a fantastic woodcut show going on. It features, among others, man prints of Buffalo boys Charles Burchfield and JJ Lankes, including the blocks used to make the prints. Also going on until through this weekend is a large display of Endi Podovic's poster-size color woodcuts. I'd never heard of him before, but I'm a big fan now.

Censorship in any of its forms is unacceptable. Mostly it is used to
control ideas. And I feel Baren should not go there. We have not had a problem
of subject matter so far. Most people have good taste and understand were we
should go and not go with out being told to that before signing up for a
exchange. I have been in a number of exchanges and have never seen work
being rejected because of ideas in it. Our only problem has been work not
done in the correct size or being late. Mostly tardy ness has been the
problem.

Hi John, Is this
a reply to my statement I would reject a print that lampooned Islam
or Mohammed? I think thats commomn sense, but I'd hate to have anyone
think that might be ok and go to all that work and have to reject it,
so I stated what should be obvious in my opinion.
BTW I am not running an official baren exchange with the Iraq idea-
just letting people at baren know I want to do one. So baren's rules
would not necessarily apply. If you feel uncomfortable joining in an
outside exchange under the conditions I mentioned, thats ok. I agree
censorship is unacceptable...but, In a time when images are being
blown out of proportion to inflame sectarian violence, I am
personally unwilling to risk adding to that problem. So I would not
"censor" a print based on my own prejudices, I would make a rule that
such statements would not be acceptable. So you could do your own
exchange, as you did after 911, with no censorship or rules, about
Iraq or anything else. We are close to discussing politics on baren
here, rather than woodblock prints,. If you are talking about the
exchange I suggested and want to dip into politics, please visit
baren after 5 and I will engage in discussion with you. I have
promised not to discuss politics or stray far from the subject of
relief prints at baren.

Respectfully,

Robin

Hello Annie,

Is this your Leicester Longwool lino cut image on page 161 of my Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival book? If this is you, I love your sheepy! I just got it in the mail today. Some of you know this by my many repeats but, I'd entered the contest for the cover art on this book. I live in Montana and well, I'm far from Maryland, but I found the contest by surfing for cover art contests.

Thanks, Mindy!

Yep, that is my sheep. I entered the cover contest, too, and didn't even get
an Honorable Mention, but the Maryland Sheep Breeder's Association asked if
they could use my Leicester Longwool on their page for a token payment and I
jumped at the chance!

No Robin, I don't even remember the problem you are talking about. I
mean it was a *big*
problem - a multi-national problem involving people from at least 3
different countries &
there was no way any of them would have come to any kind of agreement.
It was really
messy & hurtful & I hope none of us ever have to deal with that kind of
disagreement ever again!

I'll go on over to the bar later - got some wood carving to do today!
:-)
