Hi Maria,

I couldn't remember whether we discussed it or not. I'll definitely
check out the archives.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. It is refreshing to hear artists
who aren't afraid to discuss this issue....and I LOVE your attitude
about the whole thing. I'd rather make *some* money and be able to
continue my artwork than to sit with a ton of stuff (DONE that!) that
I can't sell because it's too expensive.

I don't do art fairs, so right now my website, my blog and Ebay
(maybe Etsy eventually) are the only places I'm selling.

I'm not really in it to become a famous artist. I want to make art
that people like enough to buy, and I want it to be affordable enough
so that they can.

Here's a link to one of the Allport images on the State Library of
Tasmania site. From this link in the middle of the collection, you
should be able to navigate around to see the whole thing.

BTW, I like the idea of an exchange with a political theme.

Hi All,
A quick question: In the html version of the list digest, when I click on the link to reply "To [Baren]" an error meseage 'cannot find server' pops up, does anyone know what is wrong? Replying "Privately" seems to work, a new email box comes up, though the pop-up webpage for that says 'Action Cancelled.'

Also, Maria, I visited your site and checked out your '50 latest' - your prints are lovely, I especially enjoyed the 'Morning Star' and 'Blue Moon', they remind me of camping in the Canadian Rockies. I look forward to seeing more of your 1000 prints!

Cheers,
Lee.

The two links work exactly the same way ... so if you get an error
message for one of them, perhaps just try again a moment later ... it
should work. (The email addresses are encrypted as an anti-spam
measure, and the link needs to skip over to the [Baren] website, where
there is a small script that decodes them on the fly.)

Just exactly what happens when you click one of those depends on the
settings/configuration of your own computer. It may jump straight to
your email program with a new blank email ready, or it may jump to your
browser first. That's out of our control ...

Here is a workshop that is happening righ after the summit, so anyone wanting real serious instruction can stay and take this also. Richard is delighful and a good teacher. Marylhurst is about 20 miles south of Sharri's Studio, right on the Willamette River.
Best to all,
Barbara

Richard Steiner's moku hanga workshop
8/21 - 8/25/2006
Workshop
Print Arts Northwest

At Marylhurst University, Portland, OR
Co-sponsored by PAN (Print Arts Northwest) and McClainıs Printmaking
Supplies

Class Description
Japanese woodblock prints are characterized by the luminous brilliance
of
watercolors printed on Washi, handmade Japanese paper. Unlike Western
relief
printmaking, no press is used, water is the only solvent, pigments sink
deeply into the paper, and minimal workspace is required. This is one
form
of printmaking you can safely and easily enjoy at home.

Studio work will take us through the skills needed to produce beautiful
woodblock prints. Time will be devoted to designing, carving and
printing
images using traditional techniques and materials. We will work with
Shina
(Japanese plywood), non-toxic water-based inks, and print on various
Japanese papers using hand pressure.

Instructor
Richard Steiner has been making prints for over 30 years and since 1980
has
been teaching Moku Hanga to both Japanese and foreigners, both
privately and
at Kyoto Seika University. He first began studying Moku Hanga under
Masahiko
Tokumitsu in Hiroshima in 1970. After 10 years, he received his
artistıs
name, Tosai, and a teacherıs license, then opened his own workshop in
Kyoto.
He is also the founder of KIWA (Kyoto International Woodprint
Association),
the first association dedicated solely to collecting and exhibiting
contemporary woodblock prints. KIWA sponsors an international
competition
open to all woodblock printmakers. Mr. Steinerıs work can be seen in
many
national and international museums, collections and galleries,
including the
Bank of America, Tokyo; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Victoria and
Albert
Museum, London and the Yoseido Gallery, Tokyo. You can see his work at
www.richard-steiner.net. The next KIWA exhibition will be in 2007. See
www.kiwa.net for details.

Price
Class plus buffet lunch for five days: $400 Class only, no lunch: $375
