About Baren Exchange #30...

I've returned from the most fantastic vacation in Thailand - WONDERFUL and
very interesting two weeks! I thought I had all my bases covered before I
left, but I forgot all about the sign up for exchange #30 which was to have
begun July 1st (the day I returned)... Many thanks for your several
reminders!

OK -- before I open the exchange for signer-uppers, there's one question I
should have asked weeks ago -- as this is an 'open' (NO THEME) exchange in
some size other than oban or chuban -- what paper DIMENSIONS would you
prefer for this exchange? You may wish to consider that Baren stocks two
standard exchange cases, a chuban case which can hold up to about 8.5 x 11
inch paper and an oban case which can hold up to about 11 x 16 inch paper.
So if you would like to store your prints in one of these standard
cloth-bound cases, the paper can not be larger than the case can hold
(duh!)... But maybe you'd like a miniature print exchange this time,
limiting image size to, say, 3x3 inches on an 8x10 inch sheet? Or maybe
you'd like a larger than usual sheet size -- for example, 20 x 30 inches?
Let me hear your preference, please!

I'll delay sign-up another couple of days -- until 10 am (CDT) Wednesday
July 5 in order to allow me to consider your replies...

Best,

Mike

Hello everyone!
I would like to see or do one that is almost like a scroll. Say 6" x 14". that way it could fit in one of the 11" x 16" cases.
Cheers, Rob

I always thought the elongated 1/4 ratio paper dimensions were the most
challenging, image wise.

Rats! I may not get on the list because we will be out of town, returning the evening of the 5th...

However, if I should be so lucky, I'll like to see another horizontal/landscape size, as in Exchange #24 (O-Tanzaku yoko -- 6.6 high by 15 inches wide (16.75 x 38 cm). I found that forced me to be creative beyond my comfort zone...

Mike,
I vote for small...say 8x8 or smaller...I think square is an interesting format and not that easy to do as I have found.

Hello everyone,

I am participating in the print exchange #29 and had a question about
just what is allowed and what is not.... May I use printing methods
other than woodcutting in combination with woodcuts? To be more
specific, I would really like to silkscreen one background color and
follow it up will a few more layers of block printing. Is this
taboo???

I would also like to apologize because I went to the baren web page to
look up this information, and it encouraged print exchange
participants to not be mysterious "lurkers". Well, I am quite a
lurker, but everyone on this forum is just so active that I get behind
reading all the posts.... Then I spend an hour or so, catching up to
what's been going on. I have been learning useful knowledge and tips
along the way though, so thanks everyone...

Have a happy Independence Day!

Hello all,
Since there is renewed interest in the Iraq exchange we have extended the
deadline for signing up. We almost have 25, which is the maximum number that
we are willing to take. Please write both Robin and I as I keep the website
but Robin is still the boss.
For those wishing to work on the prints already, 25+1 is the magic number of
prints to shoot for...((and you have too much time on your hands...I need
heeeeeelp framing!)) Ooops, was that last part outloud??? :-)

Here is the page once more:

Hello Angee,

From my understanding, what you propose to do is perfectly in order. I did
something like that for a recent exchange, and I plan to do something
similar for my contribution to the nude exchange. So, my understanding is
that you can do what you like, but be sure to include relief print as a
significant part of the process.

Cheers ... Charles

Sorry... but was the puzzle piece exchange ever sent out?

I get misdelivered mail about every other day... and wonder if, perhaps, mine
went elsewhere? No rush, mind you. Just don't want to have missed
participating.

Thanks.

I came across what looks like a good deal in the Jerry's Artarama Summer catalog. It's a small etching press and a set of 11 4 oz monotype basemedium for $199.99. My guess is that the press they show has a 13" by 23" bed. However, they did not give details in the catalog. In fact, they showed a photo of the press without a bed on it!

Dear Angee,

The Baren Exchange is a program for forum members to create, exchange and
display editions of woodblock prints. Relief prints pulled from wood
substitutes and wood-like materials, including linoleum, corian, MDF,
resingrave, and similar are acceptable as are collagraphs. Coordinators are
obligated to reject prints whose primary method of production is by other
means. For example: monotype, intaglio, stencil, lithography, ink jet,
laser, photocopy, etc are to be rejected by the coordinator.

That said, we have never rejected ANY edition submitted to an exchange -
we've folded them if they've been too big, we've looked the other way when
occasional 'giclee' prints are submitted, etc. Your print with a
silkscreened background will surely be accepted, but we really prefer
exchange prints to be 'woodcuts' - so you have to use your best judgment
here - why not print that background color from a block? Might be an
interesting experience and would be TOTALLY in keeping with the intent of
our exchanges.

Best,

Mike (exchange manager) Lyon
