Thanx Maria! I'm so excited about my block. I saw the first puzzle block
print at the Summit and it is grand. I've got to put my thinking cap on now
and come up with something worthy. 8-]

Hello,

My lovely old nipping press arrived last week, and I'm gearing up to use
it. The brass bits shine like the early morning whatsit, but there are a
few rust spots on the lower iron plate next to the vertical rails.

I'm leery about attacking them with a wire brush if there's a gentler
way. At a guess abrasives will also reveal defenceless "naked" iron to
the air, which will rust in turn. Does anyone have recommendations for
cleaning and treating cast iron on presses?

Many thanks!

Yup, we wished that all of you could have been there! It was
truly a wonderful group of people. Several of them actually
carved & printed & gave out an edition of prints. Thanks so
much to those people for including this 'part-time' Summiteer'!

Looks like most of you have made it home safe & sound (but
you'll never be the same, huh?)

Try buffing the spot with steel wool. If that does not remove the rust,
more drastic action is called for. Look for a product at your local
hardware or tool store called "naval jelly". It is a jell, but is mostly
hydrochloric acid ... very nasty ... use gloves, apply it outside. Or you
can get products designed to remove rust stains from toilets ... again use
gloves and apply it outside. Or you can use straight hydrochloric acid from
the hardware store with a wire brush ... VERY nasty stuff ... keep it off
your skin and clothes ... do NOT inhale any of the fumes ... definitely do
it outside.

After removing the rust, go to your local gun shop and get a "cold bluing"
solution ... follow directions. It should turn the metal a dark, greyish
blue ... helps prevent rust (it actually is a controlled "rust" process).
Then apply a light coat of oil or WD40.

Cheers ..... Charles

Hi all,

I received my Cairn block yesterday! I am happy that the block presented an idea to me right when I saw it. I love it when that happens! Thanks Maria.

Thanks Wanda, and anyone I'm forgetting, for posting Summit pictures. It's fun to see everyone having a great time. Wish I could have been there.

Thanks, Charles!

I'll try with the steel wool option first -- don't know about the naval
jelly as most of the hardware stores round here are awesomely limited in
scope. One local timber merchant won't even saw a plank in half as that
involves those naughty dangerous saws, the poor thing. But that's a rant
for another day :-)

I might be able to get hold of the gun-bluing solution, though. A friend
has a couple of small arms for re-enacting, and he might know some UK
suppliers.

Thanks again,

David

Try some WD-40 with the steel wool. That is how I clean my lathe bed and
bandsaw table and it works good.
