Hi, David...

Unfortunately I don't speak Italian, but Spanish is pretty close. Spaniards joke that Italian is 'espanol mal hablado' (Spanish poorly spoken). Here, as a second best, are the words in Spanish in case no one comes up with the proper Italian:

linocut ~ grabado en linoleo
woodcut ~ grabado en madera
wood engraving ~ grabado en madera (estampas en madera)
relief printing ~ grabado en relieve

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Maybe Julio or Maria can help out with more Spanish which might get you in the ballpark, so to speak. Another thought is taking a couple of small prints with you so you can use 'body/print language' for examples.

What a wonderful adventure. I'm envious!

Thanks Diane! Actually them'll come in handy for Spain too, as we may
pop down there as well next Spring. One of the handy things about living
an hour from Heathrow :-)

David,
We have at least one member in Italy, Colleen Corradi Brannigan , so send her an email in case she misses your post. She is opening a studio somewhere so possibly she will be able to help you on your visit, but if not, certainly with the translations. Also there is a school in Florence that has guest workshops in printmaking, I am unsure of the name but will look for it.
Best to you,
Barbara

Try the following: "block print", "woodblock print", "wood block print",
"engraving", "relief print" on http://babelfish.altavista.com/ -- for
example, "wood block print" translates to "stampa di legno del blocco"

Hi all!
Thank you for ALL of the suggestions that were sent. These are the times
when it is great to have a forum like this to fall back on. I will
experiment with these and see what works best for me.

Thanks again!

Thanks, Barbara. I'll email directly and ask for a hand. That school
sounds interesting, too!

Ellen - you're right - it is Miracle Gel, but that isn't what GC calls
it, I believe it is something else, but the same thing. Make sense?
LOL Anyway, it does not make the inks take any longer to dry, au
contraire! They seem to dry faster, probably because they are a much
thinner application. Watch using dryer of any kind as it can be
disastrous to your brayers. I took a workshop once where dryer had
inadvertently been added to all the inks. At the end of the day
several rollers had dried ink on them and had to be returned to the
manufacture for re-grinding. Mucho expensive. Just a word of caution,
and besides, I have never trusted that dryer stuff, it sounds very
toxic. What part of a human body will it dry before its time? :-)

Cheers!

Hi David,

the italian for
linocut is Linoleografia
woodcut -
xilografia
wood engraving i suppose is also xilografia... because
xilografia means a print coming from wood
relief printing Stampa
planografica

I hope this helps

THE BAREN COORDINATOR'S PRAYER

(Liberally edited and posted with permission from Baren Exchange #28
Coordinator)

Blessed are those who deliver their prints on time!

(Death by 1,000 paper cuts to false promisers and procrastinators who make
everyone else wait and wait!)

Blessed are those who do not interleave their prints!

(Most interleaves were not archival or were of unknown material - all were
removed which was more time-consuming that the collating itself - PLEASE dry
your prints and leave out any interleaving material if you care about your
coordinator even a little!)

Blessed are those who submit their print details via our website!

(The colophon for each exchange is produced from the print information
submitted on-line! Please do NOT enclose 31 copies of your print details,
biographies, or other such information with your prints. An on-line form is
provided for this purpose. Use it!)

Blessed are those who send a real self-addressed mailing label!

(Please don't neglect to include a large self-stick self-addressed label
(including a return address) to make it easy for the coordinator to prepare
the package with your prints and just slap on your label!)

Blessed are those who include their return packaging, self-addressed
including return address with sufficient postage already on the package!

(Everyone was very generous with their postage money. Not so with return
packaging!)

Blessed are those participants who have coordinated an exchange!

(You can absolutely tell which participants have been coordinators! All in
all it has been so delightful to work with the prints and the people. What
a privilege and a pleasure!)

Best wishes,

Sharen Linder

Hi Colleen,

Thanks very much -- that will help a lot!

Fingers crossed that I can find a print or two there that doesn't cost
the earth :-)

I came home from a rough day of school/work (with 300 middle school art students) to find the package of X-28 prints waiting for me. It was such an inspiration to look through the work and see - and feel - what others are doing. I am inspried to become a better printer. I spend so much time working with and training my students that my own work gets left on the sidelines. I have been quietly watching and listening and learning from all of you for a while and I wanted to say thanks to all of you. And special thanks to Sharen for coordinating this exchange.

Now the hard part will be figuring out how and where to display these prints.
Thanks to all.
