Thank you for the heads up Dave. I got to NYC about every few months and I
will be sure to catch it the next time I am down there visiting friends. I
am still upset that I missed the printmaking show at the MOMA.

Robert, thank you for the reminder to the group. You should not be out any
money when you coordinate an exchange. If you do not want to send any extra
than have your postman weigh your package and send the postage. But I do
think some times one person might have a slightly heavier set of prints than
another, so if there is a short fall one should surely make that up to our
coordinators. The right size box is very helpful in getting your prints
returned. Since the bulk of the group might exceed yours try hard to send
them in something a bit bigger. If i messed up on any of the things I
certainly want the coordinator to inform me so i can quickly reinburse them
for any added expense. I want my prints and i want them as soon as i can
get them because they are exciting to get and share. So i want a happy
coordinator, one that does not feel I have abused them. I appreciate the
statement that a coordinator should not be shy about asking for any extra
postage or monies to supply a new package if the one you sent was not
adequate or the postal department managed to mangle it. Guys these prints
have value, remember one set does go into a museum, so insure yourself that
you will get what you want and keep everyone happy.

Thanks to all our past and present coordinators.

Send Message: To this poster

Ray Barker's critical review of my show at Sherry Leedy just 'appeared'
on-line - it comes out in print in tomorrow's edition of "The Pitch" weekly
newspaper here in Kansas City. The review is definitely mixed, "So why was
this show so uninspiring?" but I think he basically got it 'right' with the
exception that the SCALE of my work seems to have passed completely under
his radar (people are so used to seeing 'BIG' artwork in galleries and
museums that the scale of these, by far the largest works on paper I've ever
produced, is really only remarkable to ME, I suppose). I got a kick out of
reading his take on "Anthony" for example, which he characterizes as
'intimate' - to me it seems 'monumental' as it's about three times larger
than life and was a real bear to make.

All in all it feels good to get ANY attention and in spite of some
'negatives', I'm really feeling very satisfied to have been reviewed at all.
There's likely going to be another review (by Alex Schubert) published
tomorrow in the Kansas City Star, our main daily paper (Oh, Gawd!)

Here's a link to the full Pitch review:

Robert and everyone,
I do share some guilt about being late in sending prints; but then again,
I've been in the wait list becoming a replacement for a drop out a few
times. IF late I always try to write the co-ordinator telling them my lame
excuse for being late and when they should expect the prints, so they are
wondering IF and WHEN they may arrive,, they can know if you need to be
replaced.... just some common courtesy..
I've given the postage amount some thought for some time now. I think all
domestic(us in the USA) should just mail a flat 10$ each. this may be more
tha the actual postage,,,but by the time the co-ordinator does colophon,
colates ,wraps, tapes, addresses, etc. everything. they have given us the
most precious of all commodities: time. there fore we should give them
enough for the postage and then some ... a nice 10$ bill (sorry John C you
cannot print this).I can't speak for outside of usa but ...get the idea
...more than enough.
Thanks Robert and all past exchange co-coordinators, I appreciate you
putting up with the various personalities,
Claudia

Mike,
Don't feel too bad that he was not complimentary...I think critics in the USA think it is their job to slam artist's work...they think if they say nice things they are not good critics. Also they use big words, to make up for their lack of insight. We see this again and again from city to city, these guys have little or no art training when they start out and are seat of the pants...they learn as they go and mostly from the big galleries (who advertise a lot with the paper) and get reviewed over and over while others would have to have a murder committed in the middle of an opening to get mentioned in the news. So their criticism is pretty uneven and mostly just negative.
If he had any concept at all about woodblock he would be blown away.

Well, a critic's obligation IS to critique!
While the world of art festivals is not really considered to be about real
art, we also get "critics" from time to time who make it their goal in life
to deliver complete critiques to those of us who they consider worthy of
their wise words. I find it amusing that they should feel they need to
"help" me.

Two University professors walked into my booth at an art festival once (no,
not the start of a joke, a true story). They proceeded to comment good and
bad about my woodcuts; expressions filled the air like "potential" and
"obvious technical ability" and "on the right track" and "unusual but
cliche" and "rather inmature" so on. The final comment was: "stick to
landscapes, the figures don't suit your style."
About that exact moment, the promoter of the show walked in and announced
that I had been awarded Best of Show for one of my figurative works. The
jurors were--you guessed it!--professors from the "other" University in town
and a local art critic.

Anyhow, I'm not surprised at the review of Mike's work but I also don't
consider it negative. Process is something that is largely overlooked (both
at art festivals and the real art world). Process fascinates only the artist
(and his/her faithful followers) and, unless it is blatantly evident in the
final works after a 10-second glance from a reviewer or a judge, in itself
process does not make the art. Process has to be explained in words and art,
according to most critics and judges, should be about the visual experience.
People simply don't hardly care how something was made, especially more and
more in the modern world with all the technology available to the mere
mortal. Critics and judges SHOULD care, but they don't really either. Image
makes the art, which is why that judge picked up on the expressions of
Mike's figures.

As the man said, make it big, if it still sucks, paint it red. Or slice up a
shark and stick it in a giant aquarium and you will be instantly famous and
rich; it is a striking image, after all, no matter how you slice it :-)
