Mike, WE appreciate!!
Some Critics--what do they know!
Find those who understand your work and invite them to your shows and studio.

Let's remember the"Salon de Refuse", the original one.

About your true story, Maria, that'll show 'em.

Many of us who've been in this game long enough have stories that are worthy
to share. Here's the idea for another little booklet to add to the first
unrealized one. Anyone?

Congratulations on the write-up, Mike. Any write-up is better than being ignored. As I see it 'them that can't, critique'. Maria's tale certainly proves this.

This should tweak curiosity of those wanting to know about the 'thumbprints' on the navels and may have more people checking out your show. And I would bet dollars to donuts that those who have read the review and seen the show will wonder where the critiquer's head is...

I agree. I think the critic has piqued people's interest now with his "navel" comment. And...he's done you a favor by emphasizing your technique -- even if he was panning it, he was still bringing it to people's attention. 8-] On the whole a positive I'd say.

I know I haven't been an active member for quite a while, but I do
follow the list. And I've been following Mike's work for almost five
years now and I've watched it grow. There's no doubt in my mind that it
is a unique product of his aesthetic and personal
sensibilities--technological in its interests, and oriented towards
making something that's the illusion of wholeness out of fragmentary
repetitions of units, not unrelated to what rotogravure did for color
reproductions. And there's also no doubt in my mind that he's done
something quite unique in the field of the woodcut.

One of the things the reviewer seems to be saying is that Mike's prints
may have interest to Mike (and by extension to other printmakers) for
their technical achievements but that this interest does not necessarily
carry over to the general art viewing public. This is an issue that has
bedeviled printmaking for much of the past 50 years, probably a function
of the widespread teaching of printmaking in universities. Do
printmaker allow themselves to be seduced by technique? Are they too
insular? I've been quite involved in another technologically-based art,
the Internet, and these same kinds of questions arise there as well. Is
the art too specialized, too given over to technical interests, not wide
enough in its appeal? Each of us has to judge for himself/herself how
to approach this issue. And I don't think you could ask for a more
positive attitude than Mike's to his critic.

Best,

Myron Turner

Hello friends!
With all the talk about the review on Mike Lyon's show, I felt I had to put my two cents in.
For this I would like to quote a very famous printmaker:

"Hey, I make art for me. If someone else likes it, that's just a bonus"
-(Robert Viana, Plymouth University, NH. 1998)
Cheers,

A quick comment on the exchanges and monies. If your budget is tight, than
it should be okay to just reinburse the artist who coordinates, it is not an
obligation to send extra. It is nice to get extra, but they are donating
their time. SO, when you CAN take your turn and collate an exchange, that
is a good pay back.

Mike,

Just remember the glory in having 2 museums want to have your work. That
certainly is a much more striking success than an art critic who decidedly
does not understand your work.

Also look at the places who have wanted your work and have also wanted you
to teach, you are successful. My hat is off to you.

As far as reviews, I'm lean towards the "It's great someone thought art mattered enough to write about." Even when writers write an article on a show, the editors will not necessarily give them the space to publish it, so it is something to be mentioned at all!

Just returned to the studio this afternoon after spending the morning at the
funeral of a dear friend who died last Saturday, the end of a two year fight
against breast cancer. Her initial tumor didn’t show up on mammograms and
by the time a sonogram showed the cancer, it was already quite advanced.
She was courageous and positive until her final day. She and my wife were
friends for 22 years, and her husband and I met through our wives and
discovered that we shared a passion for woodworking, furniture, and fine art
– for many years John was professor of design at the KC Art Institute before
he left to start his successful millwork business. He’s devastated but
trying to put up a cheery façade – just so very sad. Kerry was only 59 – I
mention this because Kerry wanted to encourage women to supplement
mammograms with an occasional sonogram, especially if they have any
suspicions whatsoever.

OK, on to the ‘woodblock’ content, such as it is – the Kansas City Star (our
‘big’ daily newspaper) published a review of my show today – you can read it
here:
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/entertainment/visual_arts/15732927.

Thanks,

Mike

Scott Adams made a post on his blog yesterday that seems very
appropriate to this discussion:

"If everyone exposed to a product likes it, the product will not
succeed. ... The only thing that predicts success is passion, even if
only 10% of the consumers have it."

Point taken, sorta... Humorist Scott Adams clarified that 'principle' with
an example clarifying what he meant by "passion":

"For example, I'm willing to bet that when the TV show Baywatch was tested,
90% of the people rolled their eyes and gave it a thumbs down. But I'll bet
10% of the test audience had tents in their pants. Bingo."

He's very funny, I think!

Thanks for the chuckle, Dave!
