Charles:

What's your email? I'd love to take a crack at building a press. I have
one set of plans, but the design is a bit hinkie, so I'd love to take a
look at someone else's design.

thanks

Hi All,

I have a sizing application question - I've never done it before, and these may be bone-headed but I can't find anywhere where it is spelled out explicitly (I did check in the Archives, if it's there and I couldn't find it - sorry for the repeat). I have a couple recipes for sizing (one from the Archives - 3/4t alum, 1 package gel, 35 oz water) and one from another book (1/8 oz alum, ¼ oz. gelatin, 35 oz water) - which I assume are roughly equivalent.

My questions are - when sizing I assume that you fully cover the entire sheet and not just where the image will be? And to do both sides you flip it over while still wet? (eep!) In my book it says that you size one side of Torinoko and both sides of Hosho (the book is from the 60's -ish Alberta...) - I'm using a paper called Bunko-shi how do I decide whether it needs one side coated or two?

Thanks!

Lee.

Show your work and show the world our artists' concern for the
environment!

The American Print Alliance is still accepting prints, paperworks and
artists' books for our next portfolio, "Soap Box Prints: For a Cleaner
Environment." The theme includes landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes,
botanical prints, endangered species, commentary on conservation and
preservation, consumption, pollution, global warming, genetic
diversity,
etc. Non-toxic and less-toxic methods and materials are highly
encouraged.
The deadline is November 15. Please read the full prospectus and
download
the entry form at our website, www.PrintAlliance.org. We will accept as
many
as three images (six prints) per artist, 8 x 10" or smaller. If we can
raise
enough money through sales from the Soap Box Prints portfolio, we will
finally be able to post the full "September 11 Memorial Portfolio" in a
special section of our website and create a CD to give to each of the
families.

The "September 11 Memorial Portfolio" of 445 donated prints and works
on
paper was on view last month at its 14th venue, in New York City at
VanDeb
Editions Gallery. Shown at hospitals, high schools and neighborhood
centers
as well as college and university galleries, our artwork - presented
all
together - has had a tremendous effect on thousands and thousands of
people.
Help make the "Soap Box Prints" portfolio as extraordinary and
inspiring, an
outpouring of concern for our world and a call for action. Encourage
your
colleagues and students to take part!

Thank you,

Well, I tried to find an address for Charles, so I wouldn't have to send a
me-too! mail about a copy of his press plans, and it seems he is either
cruising around in his Axiom Corvette, or sailing the seven seas, so......Me
too, Charles! Though I had to miss the Oregon forum, I'm still here,
lurking in the back woods of Alaska....Thanks, while I'm vociferating, to
all you bareners who have the confidence and experience to talk on this
forum about so many strange and wonderful things...Aimee Youmans

There is a rudimentary description of the process in this story about
Misawa-san (the man who sizes the hosho paper in the [Baren] Mall:
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~xs3d-bull/hyaku-nin-issho/1992/summer/
8.html#anchor_visit

He does indeed flip it over while wet ... and then - with the help of
his wife - hangs the wet sheets up for drying.

He covers the full sheet - I can't imagine how you could possibly get
away with just a partial coverage, as the sheet would warp and twist
impossibly if unevenly sized.

As for the 'both sides' question, that is your choice - sizing on the
front affects pigment uptake and spread, as well as reducing threads
sticking to the block on removal. Sizing on the back affects those
factors somewhat less, but is important to reduce paper abrasion under
the baren.

Sorry everyone for being the cause of so much internet chaff.

Email addresses of those who post to Baren may be found in the header
of their message. I just assumed everyone would look there. Alas,
some settings on some email programs suppress the full header. I
apologize to everyone.

Soooo, for those who feel the desire to contact me privately, seeking
plans, sending curses, whatever, here is my email address:

cmorgan@uvic.ca

Again sorry for taking so much bandwidth.

Cheers ...... Charles
