I'm starting to hate moku-hanga. My tools suck, my good to bad print ratio is about 50/50. Everything is expensive. It costs more to make art then you can sell it for a least for me. and the thing the really makes me mad is that people will pay more to f@#!ing frame art than they will for the actual artwork. Sorry for the rant. I really shouldn't print during the day. Carving and drawing yes but not printing. Printing requires wine.

Well as far as tools go I can vouch for Flexcut tools. LOVE them!

I haven't tried moku-hanga and I don't think I would like it. I am happy
being an oil based/ western style printmaker. Maybe you should try that.
Materials aren't really all that expensive. I don't charge a lot for my work
and I still make money off of it. I enjoy making art that ordinary people
can afford to buy even if that means that my work costs less than the
framing.

Hi Viza...I sympathize...hanga is not easy but IMO not that much harder
than the western style....true a good baren can cost a bit of money but
you can get an introductory one for $50 or a real decent Murasaki baren
for around $100-200 or so in the mall.....good quality carving tools are
going to cost a bit more than average grade blades regardless of your
style. I use a bit of both techniques...I cut and prepare blocks hanga
style then I print large color areas using a press and then go over
special areas with a baren....small color areas, areas where I want the
baren marks to show (barensuji) or bokashi (gradations) get printed by
baren only.

There are many areas where hanga technique can be tricky...making & using
paste, proper pigment & paste application to the blocks, proper paper
preparation and moisturing, baren usage....etc...for me it's usually
rushing or trying to take shortcuts....I am usually guilty of not doing
enough proofing before hand and then trying to compensate for registration
problems in the midst of printing an edition....AAaaargghhh !!!

What specific problems are you having ? maybe we can suggest some
solutions....
