Mary, love your prints, they are wonderful. You have a strong consistent
style.

I simply had no time to keep track of the new years cards this year. I
opened each one and loved getting them and than stacked them on a shelf,
hoping to get some time and space in that darn unfinished house to mount
them in an album. I just do not have time or patience to keep track, I make
them and send them. Year before last it was so highly emphasized that we be
on time with these that I did not sigh up because I knew I had no choice but
to be very late. Last year I was in the states until mid Feburary and could
get them out. This year, except for a visit to my kids in Vegas area, I will
not be in the states until the first of May. So put me down as late. I am
in the Baja and one year we mailed friends post cards, they got them a year
later. Please be patient, this is such a fun exchange.

A note about what I am doing, I am working on Marias puzzle piece, hoping to
deliver it to her this month, if she is around. I fly into Vegas on
December 22nd and leave on the 30th. Will you be available Maria??? I also
have something else special for our dear Maria.

Ahhhh ... no bait intended, Wanda. But I was pretty sure no one
really wanted the hatchet brigade leaning over their shoulder ...

I think the best thing is to regard the Oriental New Years cards as
gifts we send to each other ... freely given with no strings
attached. For me, it is very good practice, and Zeus knows I need it!!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies about the new year's cards. Thanks,
also, Barbara, for your kind words - I do generally think of myself
as a nice person :). I don't intend to sound mean and crabby,
although I guess I do. When I make the cards I always make extras so
that I can send them out to friends and family as gifts. I don't get
anything back, and nor do I expect to. These I think of as gifts. But
I had thought that for the baren group it was intended to be a card
'exchange' among printmakers, and so I did expect an exchange. As I
said before, I don't care a bit about lateness, and I have also been
really pleased to get the ones a year or more late. They've always
been wonderful! I also agree that it would be terrible to have the
exchange policed in any way. Maybe people could just think before
they sign up about whether or not they intend to send cards out?
Shireen

Barbara, this is awesome!!!
Congratulations and good success to you. Perhaps after a few more years out
in the cold I will begin to seek galleries a little more seriously than I do
now. I envy anyone who succeeds in getting into the good ones out there. May
all good things come of it, you deserve it.

Dress??? What's that?! I think when I was a teenager my mom used to get me
some strange garments that didn't have two legs built in to them, were those
dresses? :-)

I have to admit to being one of the laggards on the Year of the Dog.
Sometimes life gets in the way of intentions, alas. I do hope to get mine done and
mailed out at least within 2007, but right now I can't swing the cost of
postage. I know it isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but I am at a place in
my life where that approximately $50 can't be squeezed into the budget no
matter how much I look. This wasn't the case when I signed up, and hopefully
won't be true for too much longer, but right now it is send the ink and paper
dogs or buy food for the flesh and blood ones...

The press I was writing about can be seen on my website. Follow drypoint>adaptation of bench press. Those two drypoint images are my first attempt at drypoint and pulled with this press.

I can relate to what you're saying.
The cost of postage is not insignificant to me when considering being involved. Leaving my semi-volunteer clinical vocation for fulltime farming and my artistic career has meant a nose-dive (not in my work demands,) in my income. For me, it doesn't help that almost everyone requires foreign postage (to USA). Artists often live close to the edge financially, I'm sure others can relate to what you mentioned.

Being a dog lover, "Whippets of Mass Destruction!" is too funny!! Probably applies to ALL puppies!

Print as you can,

I offer anyone living outside the United States to send their new years cards to me and I will send them out with mine...they must be no larger than 5x7" as that is the size of my envelopes. I will probably be sending mine out by February.
This way you will have one postage to pay for one packet to me and the rest will be free as they will go with mine.

Barbara
That is a real decent and generous offer. Again, you prove what a wonderfully sturdy group Baren is!
I'll let you know for sure, when I've made a decision.

A couple other comments, Barbara, that I've been thinking and haven't told you. First, I appreciated your "Art and Accountability" posting (After 5, Oct 14/06). It was very thought provoking for me, and I could relate to much of the inner back-and-forth you spoke about. That has been VERY helpful to me.

And secondly, I share your excitement on your show at the Davidson Gallery and congratulate you!
In some ironic way, you've dealt with some of that earlier accountability (to yourself) and produced some good work.
It must be gratifying to be in such a show with other printmakers as well.

I wish you good crowds and sales, and I sure thank you again for your generosity to the community.

Best to you,
Oscar
