Thanks Maria for your entertaining and insightful little story of print numbering! I must admit to being quite random with print numbering, but your guidelines are very sensible and easy to apply to the studio situation. Another messy printmaking area of mine cleared up... thanks!

Because it is the Year of the Pig/Boar and my friend saw my New Year
cards, she sent me this email......
I took out all the lovely pictures so I could post this here:

The Three Little Pigs

Three Little Pigs went out to dinner one night. The waiter came and
took their drink order.

"I would like a Sprite," said the first little piggy.

"I would like a Coke," said the second little piggy.

"I want beer, lots and lots of beer," said the third little piggy.

The drinks were brought out and the waiter took their orders for dinner.

"I want a nice big steak," said the first piggy.

"I would like the salad plate," said the second piggy.

"I want beer, lots and lots of beer," said the third little piggy.

The meals were brought out and a while later the waiter approached the
table and asked if the piggies would like any dessert.

"I want a banana split," said the first piggy.

"I want a cheesecake," said the second piggy.

"I want beer, lots and lots of beer," exclaimed the third little piggy.

"Pardon me for asking," said the waiter to the third little piggy,"

But why have you only ordered beer all evening?"

(You're gonnaLOVEme for this..)

The third piggy says -

"Well, somebody has to go 'Wee, wee, wee, all the way home!

Numbering prints is definitely for someone other than the printmakers
because it is a real pain in the neck or backside, whichever you
choose. It may be possible to keep track of the order in which they
come out from under the baren or off the press if they are one or two
colors and you print dry and hang to dry, but mine are usually many
layers, many colors, printed wet and make the rounds of several
blotters before they are ready to be stacked, weeded out, numbered &
signed. If they don't get out of order during all that ruckus a modern
miracle has taken place. Having said all that, I subscribe to the
theory of giving the buyer/galleries whatever they want to hear –
there's another way? :-) Suuuuuure they are in the order in which they
were printed as far as I know, sorta kinda maybe......

Now, having said that: my prints usually are getting better as the
process proceeds, therefore the last print I pulled is better than the
first one. The blocks are warmed up, the amount of glue to pigment to
water ratio has settled, my rhythm is in sync with nature, etc. by the
end of the edition. So, what is the big deal about # 1, anyway?

Cheers, truthfully,
Sharri
