Hello,

I've been subscribing to the digest for a month now
and thought it time to introduce myself.

I've been an intaglio printmaker for a number of years
and am now dipping my toes into the relief pool. So
much to learn! I'm slowly teaching myself the
processes and techniques and trying not to get too
frustrated with the learning curve. The forum and
member's online sites are a wealth of information and
inspiration as I learn and grow. Thank you.

As my confidence and abilities develop in this new
medium I'll share some images. In the meantime, I've
taken the plunge and signed up for the Periodic Table
project. The images submitted so far are wonderful
and I look forward to contributing to the piece.

Live beautifully,

peggy

This post made it's way to the Baren blog over the weekend but we thought
it may be of interest to have it sent tot he forum list:

April 29, 2007
Berndt Savig
Greetings all,
My name is Berndt Savig and I was introduced to the Baren Forum by Paul de
Jode. Presently I am an assistant professor in art and am planning on
becoming more involved in printmaking when school lets out this next
month. I have enjoyed viewing the prints and looking at some of the forum
discussions, though I have yet to figure out how to join them...
I am wondering if there is anyone who would be interested in a four or
five day camping/printmaking get together in Colorado? Just throwing it
out there as a possibility. There would be room to work on prints, but
tents would be necessary for sleeping accomodations.

On another note my wife Maria and I spent the afternoon Sunday at
ArtChicago 2007, a huge gathering of galleries exhibiting all kind of
works. We saw works by many of my favorite artists like Chuck Close, Alex
Katz, Wilfredo Lam (cuban master), Fernando Botero and our very own Mike
Lyon. Two of Mike's very large ink drawings ("Rick" and "Anthony")were on
display courtesy of Sherry Leedy Galleries from Kansas City. The
highlight of our afternoon was cruising the exhibits with Mike and his
wife Linda who were in town to see the exhibit and see their son Andy.
I'll post some photos to the Baren blog later tonight.

Hello Everyone!
A friend of mine has this nice Griffin 00 etching press for sale and I thought I would pass on the info to you folks just in case you were interested.
we all know how expensive presses are and when one comes up that is a good bargain, they tend to get snatched up real quick. So have a look at this link if you need a press!
16.5" x 34" bed. This is one sweet machine!

I just downloaded the addresses for the year of the pig/boar. There are, if
I counted right, 61 people signed up. I have recieved 23 cards, about a
third of the people who are on this list. Therefore, I have decided to mail
only to those who have sent me cards. I realize these are late, since they
could not be sent from Mexico. The extra folks who do not send out cards are
a huge number and that simply seems unfair. I do understand late, so again
if you send me a card I will send you one. Maybe a lot of folks are doing
this, sending to only those who send to them, guess that means I will not
recieve cards from those who have not sent me one since I will not be
sending them one. In the past I have always sent to the entire list, but the
numbers are not good this year, so guess if I do not have a card from you,
you will not get a card from me. Hope everyone is having a good year!

Hi Marilynn

>Therefore, I have decided to mail
> only to those who have sent me cards.

This is not acceptable to me. If you signed up, you took on the obligation
to send a card to everyone on the list. I respectfully suggest that you
follow through on your responsibility.

Otherwise you put yourself in a position of judging others

Consider: you are one of those very people who are late with their card !
:o)

I am actually more concerned with the effect of this kind of thinking on the
Baren internet community as a whole.
There was a list discussion about this earlier in the year. I decided,
after hesitation for the very reason you give here, to participate in any
case. AND I have been well rewarded with some very remarkable cards! None
of these wonderful artists only selectively participated - and I am a true
beneficary of that.

Here's a suggestion, Marilynn, if you are going to do this. Send your card
for me, to one of those who hasn't yet mailed out their cards. This may
encourage them to participate, and more quickly :o)

Happy carving,
Oscar Bearinger,

My 2 cents about cards and print mailing.

I feel as though you should expect nothing from anyone.
If you signed up, you should send them all out. If others do not send out their own cards, then that should way on those individuals conscience.
If you do not expect anything to come, it is simply a joy when it does!
Baren is a place for giving.

This "hostage crisis" happens every year...pity.

I confess I am VERY LATE this year for various reasons but rest assured
everyone will get their card in about a month or so. I did a 60-hour
engraving just for the Golden Boar happy year. It's currently sitting on my
press bed, buried under a pile of matboard and foamboard cutouts. Wait, no!
it's off the press bed today as the Exch32 just took its place. Soon,
though...
The rules of this particular type of exchange were loosened to allow more
people to participate and spread the love.

I will say in response what I say every year:
I don't care who sends me cards; I don't count them; I don't tally them; I
don't care. I look at them, I enjoy and admire them, and sometimes I laugh
(well, only if they were meant to be funny). The thing I like the most about
the Yearofthe-- exchange is that cards come in ALL year long, giving me more
time to enjoy each one.
The full list ALWAYS gets my card, most years sooner than later, always has
and always will.
It's a gift; like sending Christmas cards.

Maria

To all..........
Love the responses about the New Years exhange.................good
for baren members!
Let's just enjoy and, for one, I enjoy each and every card whenever
it arrives. I ,too, have a block sitting there since February waiting
for the time to print.
The only antidote for Marilyn's problem would be to put a February
30th deadline on the exchange.
Happy printing..............E.B.Atwood

You haven't received mine yet, Marilynn, but you will by the end of May when I finally have time to print my pig up. For myself... I'm always happy to receive the New Year cards whenever the member is able and don't mind a few 'no-shows'. In fact, I've gotten some wonderful dogs just this last month!

I think if we all hold off sending cards until we receive one... hmmm... no one would ever get a card. It's alright to hold off sending mine until you get mine... do what you must or feel is right for you...

Have a wonderful evening!

Rob,

The website is great. I think dividing it up by medium is lovely. It
encouraged people to learn about the many varieties of printmaking,
and what their qualities are. And I think it is great that you are
providing a collaborative space for us printmakers to sell our work.
Power in numbers... I think some buyers are weary of both e-bay and
personal websites selling artwork. Way to make a great resource for
us... It is much appreciated...

Georga,
You are not alone...I have had the pig block done for at least two months or more but just no time to print as I have an exhibit in June...but as soon as it is done...I am sending them out. Actually this is not so bad, if I remember I sent monkey and roosters in the same envelope...that was really late for that batch. Why do we do this to ourselves? With the best of intentions we overbook. I have not signed up for any new exchanges and am not going to until I stop this new job...it has consumed my life. Who knew working could take so much time?
Best to all
Barbara
