Thanks to Barbara and Sharon for sharing some fine work with us. I found
some things in common with these two works that are interesting. First,
they were both done by women artists, Gertrude Hermes and Kathy Kollwitz.
Second, they are both black and white prints. It shows that an image can
have great impact using the contrasts in a black and white print.
Both Barbara and Sharon commmented on the strong feelings they recieved when
viewing these works. These artists seem to be doing more than just putting
ink on paper, they are putting emotion into the work. I do not think that
is something one can teach, that is something an artist either has or does
not have. Many an artist is great because they do project something beyond
just an image. However, many an artist is great because they have found a
new and destinctive manner in which to create an image. A new technique or
direction is also profound. One example that comes to my mind immediately is
Picasso creating the reduction process.

"The final triumph of Picasso the printmaker was his development of the
linocut. Picasso's invention in 1959 of the one-block technique of linocut
printing enabled him to achieve brilliantly and richly colored works on
paper. Like wood-block printing the linoleum is cut away from the flat
surface of the block except those areas that, when inked and printed,
articulate the components of the composition. Softer, more supple and
lighter in weight than wood, linoleum can be cut, gouged and slashed with
greater speed and much less effort than wood. This material and process
suited Picasso's temperament well: by taking something away he was also
creating, a contradiction the artist reveled in."

I have to admit that I am a fan of cubism and admire an inventive mind.

1.I am very interested in seeing the Kollwitz print mentioned by Sharen,
Memorial Sheet to Karl Liebnecht) but the website for it was left out.

2.Also to respond to something that Vlad asked about--sharing ideas about
techniques in particular prints
.A few years ago we had a an interesting and lengthy discussion about how a
certain artist got the effects he did on a famous print, The Scream by
Munch. For long time I tried to figure it out and I never did. The image was of a
man and a woman and how the strand of hair was printed was problematic to
me and still is.

We stay away from critques of our own work on Baren, too touchy a subject,
but do so often with one another off-list.

3. The print that Barbara loved and mentioned of Gertrude Hermes 2/1990 was
the only image on the list that didn't give the type of print, only," ink
print". I wonder why.

4. I am currently breathing heavily after discovering Amano , Kazumi.
Tomorrow someone else will be added to the list.
