Lee, you raise an interesting question about hand printing / press
printing and whether it really makes a difference. I don't use oil-
based inks, so maybe that's a whole 'nuther thing, but in my
experience with Japanese-style hand printing I find that you can vary
the pressure with the baren to get almost infinite variety in the
depth of color and the texture. You can get this variety not just
from impression to impression, but even within a single impression.
Very versatile and I think different from the all-over sameness of
pressure delivered by a press.

Sharri, the show looks great -- congratulations. Sometimes I wish I
lived in the Pacific NW -- seems like so many wonderful print artists
live out your way. Carol, all the best to you, too, for your show! I
was in NY last weekend for the IFPDA Print Fair (THAT was fun!) and
wish I had known to go look for your exhibit.

Mike, I really like the richness of tone you've achieved with the
moku hanga color applied underneath the litho. (And I love hearing
that you blew away the lithographers with your printing skills!) I
think I prefer a plain background. It's stark, especially at that
scale, and forces the eye to look at Jim and Jim only. Good luck with
your proofings.

best, Annie

Brad -
Really enjoyed poking around your flickr site. Barium is going to be another
outstanding addition to the Periodic Table project. I was interested in
seeing your printing pics as well. What material are you using for your plate?
It looks like Safety-Kut to me, rather than linoleum. If so, I am interested
to see you use a press to print with! I was taught that that Safety-Kut was
incompatible with presses - that using one was a good way to basically explode
your plate. I use SK almost exclusively, and have no problem with
hand-printing, but there are times when a press would be nice.

Hi all,

As my offering for Exchange 34 wings it's way from Lancashire (UK) to Mary Kuster in America I've uploaded a copy of it onto my blog if anyone would like a sneaky peek.

Could I ask if there's to be a New Year Print Exchange coming up for Year of the Rat?

Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Brad,

Like the background on the bi-plane. Also like your element print. You're on a roll. 8-]
