I've just been browsing through your web site, Shawn. It is
fantastic (or is that "neat" "cool" or sweet?) Take your pick,
I am very impressed.

Shawn, this is going to be a great print! I hope you haven't bitten
off more than you can chew. (Just kidding) I know what you mean
about the meditative qualiity of carving - whether it be lino or wood,
or whatever we can find. It is very calming and settling to me too.

In fact I think I'd better start another print right away, so I can
in between all the craziness that goes on at this time of year.

Hope all of you had plenty of left-overs from Turkey Day. Or whatever
occasion you have celebrated this month.

Out in cool (freezing) Oregon, enjoying the bare trees and the view.

Welcome to Baren, Mindy! You are close to a hot bed of printmakers and
hanga lovers! Keep us
posted on what you are doing! What is the name of the framing gallery
where you are working?
Maybe some of us can drive down from the Portland area & have lunch
and/or visit the gallery.

Again, welcome to Baren - you will love it here. My favorites are the
same artists you mention. I
especially love the landscapes of Hasui.

Well, a day or so early but just wanted to jump the gun here and mention
that our November 27th anniversary is here again. This time marking the
tenth year that Baren has been up and running to serve the printmaking
community worldwide.

Many thanks to David Bull for his visionary idea to start a group like
this that could share ideas & work together in projects and be a guiding
light in the cause of promoting woodblock printmaking. Many thanks also to
the forum participants whose day to day contributions are the heart and
soul of our mission. Also thanks go to those that do all the needful work
behind the scenes such as servicing the barenmall, the archives, the
formal exchange program, the newsletters and the many other functions that
keep Baren's heart beating. One last group to recognize are our friends
and collaborators in Japan.... Sadako-san, Matsumura-san, Goto-san,
Iwano-san, Yamaguchi-san and many others.

It has been very rewarding for me to have had the opportunity to meet many
of you in person or by mail and I have treasured the warmth community like
feeling that our group offers.

To date since 11/27/1997:

34,500 Baren postings, 400+ members world-wide, 40+ formal exchanges
(with an output of approx. 38,000 prints !), group exhibits in Japan,
Israel, Uganda, Scotland, Italy, Canada, England, Australia and about a
dozen more in the USA.

Happy Birthday Baren !!!!!

That's great, Charles. I reckon these presses are the way ahead for many
printmakers, especially those without the funds for a 'regular' press. They
deserve the widest possible audience.

Yes, here we are at another anniversary ... ten years this time ...

I see Julio 'Ripken' Rodriguez beat me to the punch on the posting
about it. He didn't want to mention it himself, but I wonder how many
of you know about his own special achievement here on Baren? Julio has
been a big fan of the exchanges, and has participated in 33 of the
first 34 of them ... His streak of 30 straight only came to an end when
he failed to get into #31. That's an achievement that I think can now
never be duplicated on Baren ...

And because our own archive copies are scattered around here and there,
Julio's own sets of the exchange prints are the most complete record of
the Exchange program. (Julio, better make it clear in your will just
where they are going to end up when you're done!)

But yes ... ten years ... amazing!

I started it exactly ten years ago today, by creating the list, and
then forcibly subscribing 5 other people with whom I had been
exchanging print-related emails. They went along with my 'suggestion',
and here we are, all these years later. A lot of members have come and
gone over the years (including those first five), but as any browse of
the archives will show, there has been an astonishing amount of
information exchanged here during that time. Take a random dip and see!

In recent years my own printmaking work has expanded to the point where
I'm not able to be a very active participant here on the list, and I
feel a bit guilty about that sometimes, but the group long ago outgrew
dependence on any single person, with hundreds of members now willing
to supply interesting content and to reply to questions.

None of us - including the Council group working in the background -
have much of an idea of where this thing is going to lead over the
_next_ ten years, but as there seems to be no shortage of people
getting involved with this most interesting art/craft, I don't doubt
that there will indeed be a 'Happy 20th Birthday Baren' message going
out on November 27th, 2017 ...

See you then!
