Barbara -
Is it at all possible to print either a solar plate relief (or
intaglio) by hand??!!
(unfortunately even if I had funds for a press I don't have room for one)

Louise, You can print relief by hand...but not
intaglio. I guess if you had a ball bearing baren you
might be able to do intaglio but it takes a lot of
pressure and your arm might fall off...
Printing the relief plates is not much different than
printing linoleum.
Best to all,
Barbara

I would not want to print a BIG edition, but you can print intaglio plates with a little palm press. For details, go to:

http://mossworks.com/

Click on the Techniques button at the top of the page. Then open the pdf document: Print Etchings with a Palm Press

[Baren] Daily DigestThanks for the great suggestions about solarplate, Barbara. I'd like to see your notes or booklet whenever you get a chance.

I made another plate but this time some of the fine lines curled up off the plate and fell off. I think I did not expose the plate long enough, so that the emulsion hardened the top two thirds, but the bottom third was still susceptible to wash-out.

It's a relief printing process so why would anyone care if we wrote about it on this list? It can be intaglio too, but I printed 25 rats in relief using waterbased ink before the plate started to fall apart. Little pieces started to fall off the rat's back, but that was not from printing, that was from washing it.
