Original Message:hi Bareners sorry for the tail on this
i have been trying to comment on discussion on composition and reversing of
images
but my email wont send it
as relief printmakers we have the perfect opportunity to delve into these
ideas of
composition and reversing images because BLACK & WHITE, the positve
/negative is
constantly changing before our eyes
you can see the WHITES foremost or you can see the BLACKS
i am fascinated by a viewer's first impression of my woodcuts
what do they FEEL right away
what do they SEE later
have i SIEZED their eye and lead them thru the image's composition in a
powerful way?
after having done about 200 woodcuts over 40 years ,
i am convinced that the image does NOT change when reversed.

using a mirror 16" x 20" or larger will greatly enhance
one's ability
to understand and SEE composition
because the imbalances are immediately apparent upon looking at your image
in the mirror
it is a must for carving letters- to edit for that sneaky 'n' or 'r'
you forgot to reverse!

each person IS individual in their reponses,
but i think there is a semi-universal, culturally conditioned, response
that PEOPLE ,in general, WILL have when they view certain shapes
especilly is the shapes are BLACK
and more subliminally when they are white

and if a scene of a beach or landscape
would be unrecognizable when reversed,
i draw on block WHILE looking at it
in the mirror

Four Oceans Press is still having sign-ups for their third Hand-pulled Print exchange.
There are 7 more spots available and we really would love to have a full set... There is still time to sign-up and pull a full set before the turn in deadline!!! I hope
you will consider joining this Spring 2008 Print Exchange.

All of the details can be found on their website at
http://www.fouroceanspress.com/exchange.html

Color: B/W or Color. Color is encouraged, but we love a good b/w image.

Image Size: At least 6” x 8” but no larger than 8.5” x 11”.

Paper Size: Paper must be no larger than 8.5” x 11”. It is OK if the image bleeds
off the edge of the paper.

Their first exchange has been mailed back to the Artists involved and you can see all
the prints on the archive page at http://www.fouroceanspress.com/archive_fall_2007.html

If you can not get involved this time, check the website regularly for the next
exchange and other projects. If you need a longer period of time to finish prints please
consider joining the Food Alphabet Exchange ( Letters still Open are: I, J, K, N,

As always, Thank you to all the Artists on the Baren who have been a part of the Four
Oceans Press Exchanges or other Exchanges that I have been a part of. Baren is such a
great place to meet other print-makers & learn more about printmaking... I'm currently working on both the Spring Exchange for FOP and on my Exchange #36 for Baren - I'll let you know when they are finished and you can check out my website to see the finished prints :)

Thanks & Smiles,
Heather
