Okay, I change my vote from voyage to Fool. Thanks for the
definition. I love it! Although either would be fine with me. Human
rights too.

Hi Bareners and esp those involved in exchange #34
The Baren exchanges are like gold to me. Of course, it would be nice to
touch each print, to get up close to each one, to be in the studio, or
kitchen, or bedroom, and watch each artist go from drawing to cutting to
printing, to be in one anothers' heads to see how these wonderfully
disparate images find their way to paper and this web site... but looking in
from my computer monitor is pretty good.

I strongly support putting all the images together on the introduction page

Guadalupe,
Another example of the idea "Fool" might be a figure jumping off of a
bridge to reach out for a carrot on a string. It could be any silly
situation where ones goes beyond what any reasonable person would
do. Or it could be a clown, harlequin, joker character in a silly
situation. Lots and lots of possibilities.

Cheers,
Sharri

Hi,
I'd like to added to the list of people interested in
having a chop made by Mr. Cui. I also would like to
say I don't want to get him in trouble by bypassing
the museum...

Okay folks,

After 4 days of definition and discussion, here are the results so far:

Fools (harlequins, jokers, and all foolish things) 15
Human Rights/Peace/Tibet 3
Voyages 7
Companionship: animal-human 1
Green (as in "eco") 3

Votes can keep coming through the weekend and I will tally again. Maybe by
next themed exchange I will upload a nifty survey with instant results page.

Maria

Hi all--
The fool might be considered simply silly, but I prefer a more complex
interpretation. Wikipedia phrases it well:
"The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the
mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability
to tune into the inner workings of the world. The sun shining behind
him represents the divine nature of the Fool's wisdom and exuberence.
On his back are all the possessions he might need. In his hand there is
a flower, showing his appreciation of beauty. He is frequently
accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes
as the call of the "real world", nipping at his heels and distracting
him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is standing on a precipice,
apparently about to leap, engaged in the supremest act of idiocy or
trust."

I vote for fools.

And let me introduce myself-- I've been lurking on Baren for a couple
of months. I consider myself pretty darn new to printmaking, having
not made any since my classes in college some 25 years ago. I am
usually a painter, but had a series of images in mind that called out
for block prints, and now I'm hooked. :)
You can see them here: http://www.mswest.com/artwork_camino.html.

I'm looking forward to signing up for my first Baren exchange!

Good to meet you. I'm new too. I've learned allot here.
I checked out your site. Nice work! Can't wait to see more of your

I'm also interested in participating in exchange #37. Everyone is
very talented.

Please think hard about selecting 'Fools' folks! - an OED definition
says 'one deficient in judgement or sense, a silly person, a simpleton'
etc as well as a clown or jester - I find it could feel prejudicial
to people with real mental disabilities and not just applicable to us feeling
silly or foolish at times - also King Lear's fool e.g. or the
jester/harlequin theme would produce an awful lot of figures only in
this exchange..

Couldn't 'Voyage' be bent to include practically anything you fancy
- in 'search' or 'exploration' (='voyage') being such a general term can even
include Human rights/Tibet/Green etc as well as the jester or fool
-in fact, all kinds of real and metaphorical 'voyages'?

just a thought to ponder more..

Louise,

You've made a some very good points. ALthough I don't have an issue
with the definition of Fool, my concern would be having so many images
of harlequins. I'm sure they'd be beautiful in their graphic elements
and everyone would have their own interpretation. Voyages is much
more open to interpretation.

I'm torn.
