Well, this was cute. I liked the printmaker who put a
little black in his prints later in the day....very
funny and making such fun of how serious we can
sometimes get over our art.

I am in the middle of reading the book about de
Kooning and it makes me seem like a not so serious
artist. If you have not read this you should, it
really is the history of modern art from the 20's
forward in the USA. I was surprised at that, it is
about his life, but it is as almost more about what
was happening art wise in America at the time. I am
finding it fascinating.

We just went to a talk at Print Arts NW here in
Portland with a local artist, George Johanson. When
George was a young artist and printmaker in about 1950
he went to NY for three years and met de Kooning. It
was about the time de Kooning had his first show. He
said de Kooning was very nice to him and that there
were wonderful talks in cafes almost daily where art
was discussed. Sometimes it would be a simple topic,
like what is space? An everyone would have an opinion.

Sort of like we do on the baren at times, but with
much more passion and sometimes outrageous opinions.
At any rate, I recommend the book, even though it is
not about printmaking.
Art is Life...or so they say...
My best

have not printed properly?

That's an interesting question. I don't do that, but my wife (who is a
much better illustrator) frequently proposes to augment prints with
drawing or even painting. She thinks I'm a stick in the mud for not
relenting, but especially in the case of line art, I would rather work
on doing it better in printing.

I think the mark of a professional printmaker is that they are
proficient enough in their medium to produce an edition which is as
nearly alike as humanly possible. Those are the prints that I include
in the official "edition". Needless to say, I have a pretty high kill
rate as I won't let anything go out that isn't very nearly
perfect :-) However, having said that, I think you can take some of
the "near failures" and turn them into other works on their own with
whatever means necessary. I'm working on a piece of sculpture now
which will have "recycled prints" as origami cranes or paper
airplanes, or maybe both. They have also shown up as elements in
collage, as greeting cards, gift wrap, business cards, all kinds of
things - but, they are not ever part of the edition, nor do they ever
go to "waste".

Cheers ~

I am writing just to say thank you to all the people who have included
me in their mailing list for the "year of the rat" prints. I wrote to
the co-ordinator (or at least I think I did) and told him that I was
not going to be able to participate as my husband had died very
suddenly. I was left totally grief stricken and nothing I did came
out right. It is coming up on 6 months now and I am becoming more
aware of what is going on around me. So thank you all again. I
promise I will never renege again. Syd Gelbwaks

Thanks Ellen for the link to the cool art page! I
love the ABC Book video and cracked up so much on the
"What is Art" video that my husband yelled from the
next room "What are you watching?", LOL!
Harry, If I find myself wanting to do "touch up" on a
print, I immediately set it aside to be recycled in
some way. For me personally, I like my registration
to be within at least an eighth to a thirtysecond of
an inch of where it is supposed to be. I was taught
by "old printmakers" that uniformity is the ultimate
goal of an edition and I feel like I'm giving them
respect when I stick to that as much as I can.

Yes, thank you Barbara...... mine arrived safely ..... I am amazed at
how many animals can fly!!

Yes, next year is the Year of the Ox so hopefully not too many will be
wallowing in "mud" for too long, but my philosophy is "better late than
never". I don't check my list of participants but thrilled to have to
add extra clear pages to my Year of..... albums when they arrive.

Thank you to all the Rats and Pig cards that have been arriving over
the past weeks, Thank you.

Contributors to this forum are such a breath of fresh air. I added little black eyes with a pen to a robin print, and then felt so guilty. Why do we give ourselves such a hard time... is there such a thing as 'pure' original art? Thank you so much, as ever, for such a grounded and pragmatic view on life. Happy printing to all J
