Harry, yes do doctor those prints. I had a fun time with my last woodblock
before we drove the Baja back to Washington state. I had purchased some
lovely hand made paper at my local art store and decided to print it water
based. After some soppy attempts I printed it dry with oil ink. I had done
4 attempts with the water based ink. I had a thought to just run the oil
based over top and the water base color glowed from underneath. I thought
they were pretty nifty, one friend liked them better and one friend liked
the all oil based prints better. Who knows?? They became an edition vari and
happily I lost fewer print, saving them on that lovely paper. My final print
was that icky lino that I had bought, but it worked out fine with a nice zig
zag pattern for a border. It is fun to do new things and try out variations
and just plain experiment. I have found when I step outside the pure limits
that I can get some really fun stuff.

My rats will be getting addressed some time this week and in the mail soon.
I have been having a grand time opening all those envelopes and enjoying rat
prints from all over the world, what fun! They are all wonderful and unique!
And a late to open package of prints from the 3 color exchange, what a
treat!!!

Carole I thank you for you work on this next exchange, am sad that it will
not be the full 31. It will be fun to get any way.

As some of you might know I have been reading a lot
about how your eye tells your brain what is good
imagery or what it sees or thinks it sees.
This next bit is a good example, apparently we read
words as images also and can see the word even if part
is wrong. I find this sort of thing very interesting
and the more I read about it the more interesting it
becomes.

I am thinking of doing a body of work that is left to
right and hanging it beside a piece that is right to
left but exactly the same image reversed...maybe even
matting them as a diptych.

So let me know if you can read this...the mind is
faster than the eye

Hi Bareners,

Thanks, Ellen, for the link to the claymation video. I would comment on it,
but try as I might, I can't get You Tube with my dial-up connection. Sigh.

As for "what is art" -- if any of you haven't already experienced Outsider
Art then let me turn you on. For starters is Adolf Wolfli
(http://www.adolfwoelfli.ch/). I came upon his work in an exhibition at UC
Berkeley back in the 80's. After that my love of Outsider Art just grew.
There is a studio near where I lived in San Francisco called Creativity
Explored (http://www.creativityexplored.org/) where wonderful art happens
every day. Also, Watts Towers in LA (http://www.adolfwoelfli.ch/) is a
wonderful epicenter of art. There are also many publications featuring
outsider artists and art.

Have fun!

Peace,
Eileen

Harry,
I think touch-ups are okay especially if you cant tell the difference from the other prints. i usually do touch-ups put them back in the stack go through the stack again and if i cant see any difference then they stay. I also think that if you use a pen to make an eye on a bird or use watercolor in a print that is okay as long as you list it as woodcut with watercolor. I don't think rules should force you to through away art that you like and are willing to sign your name to.

Harry, I'm glad you brought that up. Some off register prints look
kind of interesting, and I leave them. But there are other tweakings
I do and I always wondered if others do what I have done on occasion
and that is to take a thin wooden skewer and dot in some color in a
place that is empty because when carving, the knife had slipped and
cut out more than intended. That's what I've been known to do. I've
tried fixing some of those by adding bits of wood back in, but I'm not
very skilled at that and usually in the print you can tell.
