sorry, I think no, she was so great printmaker and well upgraded every day, that it is not supposed to be influenced by other technique to else and she allways thought on realization of print in his own special qualities and as so much expressive in smooth sad drawings ...her style was not important for her as a result..

Yes, I also don't think it was accident, I've seen this effect in a few other woodcuts by other artists (roughly from the same expressionist area). I think the suggestion with multiple-tint tool might be
the right one, it does seem like there are a lot of very fine parallel lines in that area. I guess one could achieve a similar effect by scratching the area with a nail or something similar, sharp but not carving-tool sharp. Probably the way it's inked also matters, the artist might use a hard brayer and/or wiping the area of excess ink.

Kathe Kollwitz was an accomplished printmaker, she's worked with intaglio, litho and woodcuts, so I'd not be surprised if she was inspired to achieve these effects by her work with other mediums.

Marilynn,
Congrats on the new toy. You will love it! To avoid problems with
the Baren I had to change browsers from Safari to Firefox when I
upgraded to the latest OS X. You might give that a try and see if
that solves your problems. Firefox has some very nice features, I'm
sure, but I haven't had time to learn them, yet - LOL Gadzooks! It is
hell being retired - just no time to yourself –

Tibi,
I think what Barbara is referring to is folding a small piece of
terrycloth and securing it in a large clip (like used to keep chip
packages closed after opening). Richard Steiner showed us that trick
at the class at Marylhurst U last summer. It works very well for Moku
Hanga, but I don't see why it could work for brayer printing, also.
After inking you could wipe the area of the block in which you want
the texture and daub the terry/clip device over that space. Does that
make sense?

Folks,
Just to add a wrinkle, or confuse things further on this texture question
:o)

I'm reviewing some Eric Gill woodcuts for a piece I'm designing,
and I've come across some woodcuts with texture very similar to Kathe
Kollwitz' The Sacrifice.

Example: "The Woman", woodcut, 1914 (P24 in the Albert&Victoria Museum
collection, also others)

Here's what Eric Gill wrote about this piece:
"These were experimental blocks, very shallow woodcuts, so shallow that the
ink from the roller touches the background, but this is done purposely so
that you get a faint kind of modelling on the figure." (Letters of Eric
Gill, 1947)

The look of the texture on the figure is similar.
In my eye, in both cases the texture adds a wonderful depth to the prints.

Isn't experimental art fun?!!

Hi,

I think the textural effects can be achieved several ways. I would
suggest trying different things. I have achieved interesting texture
by leaving my boards in a rough state, not sanding them smooth. That
is a personal choice, I like the surprises I get. Some times though
they are too rough in spots and I do need to either carve out areas or
sand them smooth. It is fun to experiment and see what happens. I was
told years ago, hey it is only a piece of paper, well it is only that
and a piece of wood. Failures can lead to growth and further
success. My friend looked at my exchange 36 print and said that is
not as good as you usually do. But I learned a lot. I like that
thought, even when it is not as good as it could be, it was an
experience I would not keep from doing.
