Shawn, the power grip tools were the first ones I got. They are pretty good, and a nice set of starter tools. but they don't sharpen up nearly as sharp as the fancier Japanese tools. If you decide to continue more extensively with woodblock carving, surely you will at least want some larger clearing tools, such as the soai nomi and maru nomi. Here's a webpage w/pictures of some of those on the McClain's website

I'm sure the baren website must have these as well.

There may be cheaper American varieties of these that are suitable for your needs, but Japanese steel is so especially suited for carving, that I find these tools to be worth every penny (though they have gone up in price considerably from when I bought mine).

happy carving,
Sarah

well, i didn't get the power grip brand, they seemed pretty cheap and i couldn't find a manufacturer's website or anything like that. so i found www.warrencutlery.com and found the same handle shape and laminated steel tips, and only $8 each. right now i think that's all i can really afford. they just seem like they'd be higher quality than the power grip tools.

thanks all for your input!

Greetings to you all,
It has been some time since I uploaded my recent works, so here they are under the 'Latest prints' section.
http://www.harryfrenchartworks.co.uk
I am still on target with my New Year's resolution to do a print edition each week. It seems quite a strange ambition now that I'm half way through the year because I seem to be producing some pot boilers to keep up the editions.
Ok, before you say it ..What's new about that!!
Regards,
Harry
