Shawn, Baren is run by people not web-robots, so "entering your blog in the
blog thing" doesn't automatically do anything. You probably just forgot to
say the magic word.

Just send your blog address along with a nice note to the blog manager that
says you would _please_ like to be included in the blog announcements.
Sometimes emails get tagged as spam for some unknown reason and get tossed,
especially when they are missing subject line or body content.

Thanks Mike and Charles for the response for additives. When I
ordered them I thought that was the case, than I went back to the site
to see if I could not get an explanation as to the content of those
little jars. They gave all kinds of details about additives and I
began to wonder if there was something more than rice paste that I
should be adding. The label on the jars of pigments goes on and on
about toxicity and that worried me. I plan on taking these pigments
to Baja with me, I pictured some airline employee reading those labels
and panicking and throwing out all my pigment dispersions. Some how,
I have to get it through their brains that these will not blow up as
they are merely dry pigment suspended in water.

Graham, it may be awhile before I use these dispersions as I will be
helping to lay my studio floor starting today. Why don't you ask
Charles, he is right there in your area?

Maria, I used a template and 4 blocks for the last exchange print I
did and it was a fun way to use several smaller blocks on larger
paper. The only mistake I made was to use mat board, the blocks
slipped a bit. Next time I will use foam board. That is what I meant
when I said get creative. Thanks for the suggestion, still wanting to
join Trees and pondering the time element, guess I could try and bow
out early if it does not look like I will get it done in time, I just
hate to do that.

i never said it was run by web-robots. i said i entered my info in the form (YES all the spaces). when i was told to enter my info in the blog form THING on the baren website i did so. i was asked to NOT post messages saying Hey, go check out my new stuff b/c that's what the blog thing is for. that was a few weeks ago. i did it again b/c maybe it got lost in the mail. i followed the instructions. so i'm supposed to say magic words in a form? where are the instructions that i have to kiss up on the form page? i didn't know i had to go through some sort of application/interview process for my blog address to be included in a list of blog addresses. did anybody else have to ingratiate themselves on the blog form to get listed??

so... include me? ___PLEASE?___
i'm not getting on my knees, though.

Hi Maria and Bareners,

I, for one, was disappointed when I found out the Swap Shop was defunct. I
thought it would hold something of the excitement of a potlatch, to put a
random print in the mail and them get one back.

Why did the Swap Shop perish? When I asked about it months ago, someone
replied that any two people could still make a trade if they wanted. While
that is true enough, I think the idea of giving without clue of what would
be returned would be a fun way to meet other Bareners.

I'm willing to host a Swap Shop, but perhaps someone with more time at Baren
would be better. Doesn't matter to me. I would just like to be able to make
swaps. The way I thought it might work is that Bareners would send the
coordinator a print with some kind of cover sheet and a SASE and the
coordinator would send back to them a print of roughly equal size (or at
least not too big for the mailer they provided).

As I said, the reality may be that there is not enough interest. Any
comments out there?

Sign up looks good so far! Hurray for moku-hanga fans…

Remember that if those who participated in #38, we are on the 1-week
“holding pen” to allow variety in participants.
After October 8th the holding pen gets moved up and any subsequent sign-ups
go to the bottom.

Also, very important always but more so in this particular exchange, anyone
that ends up on the waiting list should plan and print as if they were "in"
because of the extra time that it takes to do a multi-color/block moku-hanga
edition.

I believe the swap shop has been defunct all the time I've been a member, or
I might have done it already. I think it's a kewl idea. What is the reason
that folks don't want to do it that it remains defunct? I like surprises.

I think the Swap Shop is a great idea. It could be a great way for people who miss out on an exchange to still get the thrill of exchanging works. The mystery swap idea also sounded neat but, I think that would have to be taken on by someone who is really dedicated on keeping things going.
Maybe it would be best to have a small group in charge of the swap shop instead of just one person. The people in the group could take turns running the swap so it doesn't rest all on one person's shoulders all the time. Would there be a way to form a group of individuals interested in reviving the Swap Shop? "Project Swap" group or something...??
I would be interested!

The Swap Shop system in the past had people send in a few prints and when
there was a "critical mass" the coordinator would send back as many as the
person sent in. There was a minimum, I think and also size restrictions to
keep postage affordable for all. Oh and a nominal fee to cover postage and
mailing supplies, basically just like a regular exchange but less $ or
postage as the prints were smaller usually.
Unfortunately there seemed at the time to be little interest despite much
encouragement and enthusiasm from our Swap Shop Manager, James Mundie.
Prints were sent in and they "sat" and waited for little happy friends to
appear, but, sadly, none did.

Perhaps Jim can better explain the system and certainly a new system might
be explored by those (blessed you are) that are willing to undertake this
little gem.

As far as tasks required to resurrect and run the Swap Shop, just off the
top of my head, they would include:
-communication with participants through Barenforum and otherwise
-management of prints (one central address) and one "spokesperson" or
"manager" in charge of sorts, like a coordinator for the SwSh-Group
-mailing out sets or prints
-scanning and web posting of the Swap Shop prints
-web maintenance of the introduction page with instructions to participants
and pertinent announcements, sort of like the Exchange information page(s)

If I'm forgetting anything, someone please chime in.

It would be WONDERFUL if a few members got together and could pull this off.
If you can find eager volunteers that will undertake those tasks, Tina, put
a group and system together that you and the membership think might work and
submit something informal in terms of a plan to the advisory council for
approval (which more than likely will be an enthusiastic
PLEASE-THANK-YOU-GO!). Basically just the Who, How, When, Cost to
participants, etc.

Nice to hear these discussions about a potential revival of the
SwapShop. I'm sure Jim Mundie - who gave it a pretty good shot - is
smiling at this news and thinking to himself ... "Good luck ..."

It always seemed to us that the reason it never 'took off' was the
conflict with the regular exchange program, which - as we all know -
has been phenomenally successful. There just didn't seem to be room for
both.

But perhaps times have changed, or perhaps with some different ideas,
it can fly. So please feel free to put some ideas together; nothing
standing in the way at all.

Go for it, gang!
