Very interesting responses and information. TMI for me, but--.
My usual 2 cents:

If you want to follow whatever the traditional strict rules of Moku Hanga are decided on, then sign up for Exchange 39. If not, do not sign up.Wait for an exchange that suits your needs, whether they are experimental, idiosyncratic or other that fit into Baren..

A while ago there was a call for woodblocks by lefties. It caused interesting responses, even a right handed Barener who wanted to participate and promised to carve with her left hand . This resulted in
Lefties Can Carve , a small fun exchange.

Subject: [Baren 37193] Exchange technique
Send Message: To this poster

On this occasion my personal reason to join the Moku Hanga exchange is both to rise to the personal challenge of creating a Personal Best, and to have a collection of work to show other people just what an amazing range of results can be got by using this technique by different artists.

Different exchanges can demonstrate different techniques applied to a common subject, or restrictions such as one colour etc, but to have a defined technique calls for wonderful creativity on the part of each individual artist. I vote happily to keep to the traditional Moku Hanga rules on this one. I have enjoyed leaning the correct definitions and the discussion on just what makes a Moku Hanga has been most interesting. Now comes the scary part...actually making a set of prints with clean edges, no blotches and vaguely like the inspired vision which lurks in my head. Good luck to all.

Sarah and Bareners,

This may be by now a non-issue so forgive me my poor attempts at guidance
(but hey, I'm not running for President...

Sarah, you said, "I particularly vote for being able to use just one block
if that is what your image calls for."

I wanted to point out Exchange #15 which was all Moku Hanga. If you look at
Bobbie Mandel's print you'll see that it uses two colors by first printing a
background in one color and then printing the image on top of it. Not
complicated, but it would have served to introduce the artist to the simple
mechanics of multiple blocks and resulted in an attractive print as well.

My first attempt at hanga (Exchange 37a) crashed and burned during the
second color. My error? I wasn't careful, or knowledgeable enough, with
color intensity. Although I thought it would dry lighter, my second color
was TOO dark and ruined the whole run. Also, I had a way too complicated
idea (for my beginner level) for a print and multiple blocks.

My suggestion is: keep it simple.

Peace,
Eileen

Available on Briar Press http://www.briarpress.org/14561 .

I know nothing about the seller or this material, just noticed
it in their classified ads this morning. Contact the person
however you may through the ad, not through me.

Best wishes,

Subject: [Baren 37196] Exchange #39 Hold - 1 more day
Send Message: To this poster

The 1-Week Holding Pattern for the much talked about and exceedingly
controversial Exchange #39 is almost over, deadline to sneak ahead of those
who participated in #38 is tomorrow.

After October 8th, 3:00pm GMT the holding pen gets moved up and any
subsequent sign-ups go to the bottom regardless of previous participation.

Also, very important always but more so in this particular exchange, anyone
that ends up on the waiting list should plan and print as if they were "in"
because of the extra time that it takes to do a multi-color/block moku-hanga
print.

So far, the majority of participants seems to be in agreement with Mike
Lyon’s “rules” and description:

1. multiple blocks
2. kento registration – corner and side notches carved into each block to
facilitate registration
3. water-borne pigments
4. pigments applied by printing brush (different tool than paint brush,
brayer, or roller)
5. Washi -- Japanese paper optimized to hold up under numerous printing
passes
6. hand printed using baren

These seem to me to be the main characteristics which distinguish Japanese
woodblock printing (moku-hanga) from other relief printing methods during
the past several centuries.  The ‘challenge’ here is to print and exchange
prints made using “Japanese” technique (moku-hanga) – to me, that means the
minimum ‘threshold’ might be “washi printed with water-borne pigments
applied by printing brush to multiple carved blocks registered using kento”,

I'm cool with Mike's assessment and was fully planning on "going all in"
when I signed up. I think we are all adults and can read over the
conversations thus far and decide to either meet the challenge or gracefully
bow out (rumor has it moku-hanga tastes a little sour anyway).

Information and sign-up page is here:

Maria, very good points, I agree with that minimum requirements
thingie.......go go #39 !!!!

On a side path, while we have been discussing process, materials and
history quite a bit lately.... I want to point out that beyond that this
exchange offers a great opportunity for those that may want to try some of
the special printing techniques that are common to the genre.......for
example 'bokashi', 'barensuji', 'kimedashi", "Karazuri" and "Kirazuri"
among others. It is the masterly use of these techniques that usually
brings the 'wow' when viewing Japanese prints.

For more info (and translation) on these techniques I'll point you to two
links on the Baren website and the extensive book library at the end of
the first

Gosh Julio, don’t push it, some of us inexperienced printers might be
inclined to try hara-kiri instead…

Hey all, new member here. I fully agree with Dave's advice to observe
a printer at work. I am very new to the process and would love to
learn by watching too, however I live in Shenzhen, China (across the
border from Hong Kong). Does anyone know a place I could get some
directions/observations and supplies (brushes etc.) here in China or
Hong Kong? I have been trying to go off of the different resources i
can find online, but there is no comparison to see prints being made
in person. I have tried the shoe brush, but it is a little funky.
Thanks a ton!

Thanks to Annie and Graham for answering my shoe brush question. I may just
go for the real thing, that way if I screw up, I'll know it's just me and
not the brush!

and..... you will get there with a lot less frustration. Look at it
this way.... If you don’t like the sport you would be able to sell the
tool here very easily.
